With only a half hour for dinner, they start to order hamburgers and soda pop, but the waiter keeps insisting that they order chateaubriand, duck a l'orange, or pheasant under glass, with an appropriately paired wine.
When the waiter (a young Sid Caesar) brings the order into the kitchen, the French chef is insulted by the order and takes it out on Caesar. It's a very funny bit of sketch comedy.
Enjoy!
This week's sketch is a tribute on Caesar's centenary. The comedian was born 100 years ago on September 8, 1922.
No date is available for this sketch, which has only been released on very rare out of print VHS/Betamax tapes. We're grateful to a Sid Caesar super fan who found these tapes, had them transferred digitally, and shared them with a poster who made them available on YouTube.
Sid Caesar's gift of proficiency in speaking doubletalk in four languages was one of his greatest assets. He used it successfuly throughout his career in his many TV appearances on his own programs, Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour, as well as in guest appearances on other shows.
In this throwback episode from The Ernie Kovacs Show, Caesar plays the role of a stern Japanese father laying down the law to his two daughters who are getting ready for dates with American men.
While today the skit would be criticized as culturally insensitive, when it appeared on TV in 1980 it was just funny.

Caesar was considered a "sketch comic" and actor, as opposed to a stand-up comedian. He also relied more on body language, accents, and facial contortions than simply dialogue. Unlike the slapstick comedy which was standard on TV, his style was considered "avant garde" in the 1950s. He conjured up ideas and scene and used writers to flesh out the concept and create the dialogue.
In this sketch on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1965, Caesar played the part of a suitor meeting his girlfriend's stuffy parents for the first time, an encounter in which anything that could go wrong, did.

The series was sponsored by TV-set manufacturer Admiral, a competitor of NBC's parent company RCA and of DuMont, both of which manufactured TV sets. Cancellation of the series resulted from demand for Admiral's TV sets exceeding the company's manufacturing capacity. Admiral's executives chose to shift the money spent on the program into an increase in manufacturing capabilities.
Its final episode aired June 3, 1949. This Caesar-Coca pantomime appeared on May 27, 1949.

After Caesar's successful TV career with Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour which ran from 1950 to 1957, he focused more on movies, with occasional TV appearances on variety shows such as Ed Sullivan's.
In this 1964 solo appearance, Caesar analyzes the different responses of married men and bachelors to the onset of a common cold.

The story begins during a massive traffic jam, caused by reckless driver Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante), who, before kicking the bucket, cryptically tells the assembled drivers that he's buried a fortune in stolen loot, under the Big W.
The drivers, who meet by chance, include Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Phil Silvers, Ethel Merman, and Jonathan Winters. When negotiations for dividing up the buried treasure break down, everyone runs to their cars and the race for the money is on.
The 1963 movie runs three and a half hours and it's worth taking the time to watch it all.

A good example of this was a sketch on the Admiral Broadway Revue in April 1949 in which Caesar portrayed foreign movie industry leaders arriving at LaGuardia Airport on their way to the annual cinema conference.
As he gets off the plane he is interviewed about the Italian, French, and Russian entries in the film competition. He describes each film in fluent gibberish.
