Here Come the Chanukah Videos: The Maccabeats Turn a Wicked Song Into a Tribute to Jewish Survival

With so many Jewish singing groups coming up with Chanukah parodies and new lyrics for songs from the hit movie Wicked, we expected one from the Maccabeats and here it is.

In 2010 The Maccabeats, an a cappella group from Yeshiva University, released their first Hanukkah music video, Candlelight, and every Hanukkah (and other holidays) since then we've seen many more videos by them and lots of other groups.

Originally formed in 2007 as Yeshiva University’s student vocal group, the Maccabeats have recently emerged as both Jewish music and a cappella phenomena,  with a large fan base, more than 20 million views on YouTube, numerous TV appearances, and proven success with three albums, 2010′s Voices From The Heights, 2012′s Out Of The Box and 2014′s One Day More.

Many of their songs are parodies of pop hits, and this Chanukah they're continuing the tradition with new lyrics for the movie's signature song Defying Gravity that celebrates  the spirit of the Jewish people. The lyrics appear below.

The a Cappella group Six13 is bringing some much-needed light into the world with a fun medley of songs from the hit movie Wicked, with Chanukah lyrics replacing the Wicked originals.

Six13 is a six-man vocal band that brings an unprecedented style of Jewish music to the stage, with songs ranging from hip-hop dance tracks to rock anthems. The members of the New York City-based group sound like a full band – while using nothing but their voices.

Now Six13 has released a rousing, energetic new musical video for Rosh Hashana titled "5785". It's a takeoff on the song "1985" by rock band Bowling for Soup, whose name is a takeoff on a comedy routine by Steve Martin with a title that we can't print here.

This is our last musical video for Rosh Hashanah 5785. Tomorrow we'll post our annual personal family greeting to our readers.

Welcoming Shabbat with Yedid Nefesh by UMD's a Cappella Group, Kol Sasson

Founded in 1997 as the University of Maryland’s premier Jewish a cappella group, Kol Sasson has been serving the national Jewish community with song for over twenty years. Comprised of students from all backgrounds, studies, and cities around the country, the members of Kol Sasson come together to perform a repertoire ranging from English and Israeli pop to traditional Jewish melodies, and more.

Welcoming Shabbat with Avinu Shebashamaim by the Moscow Male Jewish a Cappella Choir

Avinu Shebashamaim, the Prayer for the State of Israel, is usually sung in the Shabbat morning service. It is also sung at special days, such as Yom HaAtzmaut, and other days when congregations unite to show support for the State of Israel and the people of Israel.

As we get ready for Shabbat, let's watch Alexander Tsaliuk conduct the Moscow Male a Cappella Choir singing Avinu Shebashamaim at a performance a few days ago to commemorate Yom Hazikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut.The concert was at the Memorial Synagogue on Poklonnaya Gora in Moscow with soloists Cantor Uriel Granat and Vladislav Ayrapetyan.

Maccabeats Sing "Acheinu" at Massive March and Rally for Israel in Washington D.C.

On November 14, at the end of the march and rally for Israel on the mall in Washington, D.C., the Maccabeats took the stage and sang the prayer Acheinu.

Their voices were joined by the voices of the 290,000 people who attended the rally.

Three a Cappella Groups Unite to Sing Prayer for Welfare of State of Israel

When words fail, as they often have after the events of the past weeks, we turn to song and prayer. 

This week three of the most popular Jewish a cappella groups -- The Maccabeats, Six13, and J-Studs -- have combined their voices to perform Avinu SheBashamayim, the Prayer for the Welfare of the State of Israel.  

Sending comfort to the bereaved, wishes for a speedy return of the hostages, and prayers for the safety for our brave brothers and sisters called up to protect Eretz Yisrael. Am Yisrael Chai!

A Prayer for the Israel Defense Forces on Yom Hazikaron

Tonight is the start of Yom Hazikaron, Israel's Memorial Day, which lasts until Tuesday evening. All schools have special plays and ceremonies on Yom HaZikaron, enacted into law in 1963. 

While the day has been traditionally dedicated to fallen soldiers, commemoration has also been extended to civilian victims of terrorism. 

As the sad day ends, the country is transformed at nightfall into all night partying that lasts through the following day to commemorate the founding of the state 75 years ago.

At many of the memorial ceremonies, names are read, photos projected on screens and walls, prayers are read and appropriate songs are sung. 

We're doing our part at Jewish Humor Central on Yom HaZikaron, by abstaining from humor for the day and posting a rendition of the Prayer for the Welfare of Soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) by the a cappella group Six 13 and Cantor Chaim Dovid Berson.

Mi Sheberach is a prayer for the soldiers of Israel's Defense Forces that is sung to the tune of El Eretz Tzvi by Yehoram Gaon.

Welcoming Shabbat with Anim Zemirot by Tizmoret (Queens College Hillel a Cappella Group)

Tizmoret is Queens College Hillel's professional Jewish a cappella group. Tizmoret draws singers from colleges throughout New York City and has taken Jewish collegiate a cappella to the next level, performing classic Jewish melodies, American pop music and contemporary Israeli tunes. The group has produced seven CDs and 2 EPs. 

Tizmoret has performed for college campuses, countless b'nei-mitzvah and synagogues, and various music festivals across the Eastern United States. They tour the east coast of the United States (and have crossed into Canada), they have won Kol HaOlam (the national Jewish collegiate competition) three times, and they performed at the White House Hanukkah Party in 2014.

Welcoming Shabbat with Yedid Nefesh by Magevet, Yale University's A Cappella Group

Tonight we welcome Shabbat with an a cappella version of Yedid Nefesh, part of the Kabbalat Shabbat service. It's a beautiful rendition by Magevet. 

Founded in 1993, Magevet is one of the nation’s premiere Jewish a cappella singing groups. A coed ensemble comprised of undergraduate students at Yale University, Magevet is known for its sweet blend of voices, unique arrangements, and lighthearted sense of humor.

​The group’s diverse repertoire spans modern Israeli pop and Renaissance choral pieces to Yiddish folk tunes and Zionist classics. The members of Magevet are equally diverse: engineers and historians, Jews and Gentiles, New Yorkers and Californians, all united by camaraderie and a love of singing.

Welcoming Shabbat with the Y-Studs and Evolution of Shabbat

The Y-Studs, the Yeshiva University a cappella group, has produced Evolution of Shabbat, a video that includes most of the Shabbat songs that we know so well. It's a follow-up to their 2017 video Evolution of Jewish Music chronicling the evolution of Jewish music from the 1600s to the present day.

 

In this just-released video, the Y-Studs sing a medley of excerpts from the Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service, kiddush, zemirot, Shacharit, Torah reading, Musaf, Seuda Shelishit, and Havdalah.

Six13 and 22 a Cappella Groups Sing "Al Hanissim" as Purim Starts Tonight

No collection of Jewish holiday music videos would be complete without an entry from Six13, an a cappella group that has produced videos for Chanukah, Rosh Hashana, and Passover. In previous years we posted many of their Jewish music videos.

Miracles never cease! Al Hanissim is a text sung on Purim and Chanukah, two of the many holidays on which we thank God for the miracles performed for us.

Here Come the Purim Videos: Rabotai a Cappella Sings "Girls Like You" Purim Parody

Purim is almost here, with the reading of Megillat Esther this Thursday evening February 25. We're on the lookout for new Purim videos and we'll share with you any good ones that we find.

Rabotai, (meaning gentlemen) is a fresh and exciting Jewish a cappella group comprised of energetic vocal talent and professional beatboxing. 

Coming from different corners of the world, its members found each other in Israel, where they are rapidly becoming a sought after group to entertain audiences big and small. They specialize in mixing classical Jewish songs with modern pop.

In this video, the first Purim video we're posting this year, Rabotai turns the pop song Girls Like You by Maroon 5 into a song of praise for all Jewish girls like Queen Esther.

Eight Jewish Schools Unite to Sing "Lean on Me"

Eight Jewish Day Schools and High Schools in New York and New Jersey joined together in song, uniting young people all over the world as they head into the summer after being isolated at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Message to young people from your peers: it's going to be okay.
