A Mother's Day Musical Special: Cantor Azi Schwartz Sings "My Yiddishe Momme"

Today is Mother's Day and we celebrate by posting a tribute to all mothers in the form of a new rendition of My Yiddishe Momme by Cantor Azi Schwartz of the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York.

My Yiddishe Momme is a song written by Jack Yellen (words and music) and Lew Pollack (music), first recorded by Willie Howard, and was made famous in Vaudeville by Belle Baker and by Sophie Tucker, and later by the Barry Sisters.

Tucker began singing "My Yiddishe Momme" in 1925, after the death of her own mother. She later dedicated her autobiography Some of These Days to Yellen, "A grand song writer, and a grander friend". Sophie Tucker made 'Mama' a top 5 U.S. hit in 1928, English on one side and Yiddish on the B-side. Leo Fuld combined both in one track and made it a hit in the rest of the world."

Enjoy, and Happy Mother's Day!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special - Gertrude Berg in "How to Be a Jewish Mother" on The Ed Sullivan Show

Today we're turning the clock back 55 years to September 1965, when Gertrude Berg made an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

In that segment, Berg (using her Molly Goldberg persona) gave Sullivan a tutorial on "How to be a Jewish Monther" - the techniques of basic suffering and making basic sacrifices.

Examples include:

- How to behave when you discover your daughter necking in the living room
- How to entertain people who come to your home for dinner
- How to tell a funny story

Enjoy!

Twitteleh - Twitter for Your Jewish Mother

We've been posting more than 2600 video clips since October 2009, and we've spent more than many hours surfing the Internet to find them. But there was an Internet before 2009, and we're sometimes surprised that there were funny Jewish videos before then.

Today we came upon a video clip that's just as funny and relevant today as it was when it was posted back in September 2009 by Reg Tigerman. It's an announcement for a new app called Twitteleh -- Twitter for Your Jewish Mother.

Any time you want to update your Jewish mother, just answer these three questions:
1. Where are you?
2. What have you eaten?
3. Are you wearing a sweater?

Enjoy!

A Mother's Day Special: "A Yiddishe Momme" with Neil Sedaka, Itzhak Perlman, and Yitzchak Meir Helfgot

Today is Mother's Day and we're dedicating today's post to our mothers - past, present, and future - with a beautiful rendition of the classic A Yiddishe Momme.

The song  was written by Jack Yellen (words and music) and Lew Pollack (music) in 1925. It was first recorded by Willie Howard, and was made famous in Vaudeville by Belle Baker and by Sophie Tucker, and later by the Barry Sisters.

Sophie Tucker began singing My Yiddishe Momme in 1925, after the death of her own mother. She later dedicated her autobiography Some Of These Days to Yellen, "A grand song writer, and a grander friend". Sophie Tucker made `Mama' a top 5 USA hit in 1928, English on one side and Yiddish on the B-side. Leo Fuld combined both in one track and made it a hit in the rest of the world."

The song, in English and Yiddish, sadder in the original Yiddish than in the English translation, the mother implicitly symbolizes a sense of nostalgia for the "old world", as well as guilt for having left it behind in assimilating into American society.

In this video, violinist Itzhak Perlman and Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot perform this popular Yiddish classic with vaudeville roots with a preface by singer and composer Neil Sedaka explaining the song's history.

We wish a happy Mother's Day to all of our subscribers and casual viewers.

Enjoy!

If Jewish Mothers Wrote "Baby, It's Cold Outside"

One of the most often played songs during the winter holiday season is Frank Loesser's classic, Baby, It's Cold Outside. The song was included in a 1949 film titled Neptune's Daughter and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The following year Loesser wrote the music and lyrics for Guys and Dolls.

Jon Wolf and Matt Campana wondered how the song would sound if the lyrics were written by a Jewish mother. So they created a parody with animation that addresses that question head-on.

We hope you'll enjoy the parody, and if you don't remember the original, we're posting a video clip of it as sung by Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.

2014 has been a wonderful year for us at Jewish Humor Central. We hope it's been a great one for you, too. Enjoy today's video, and don't forget to dress warmly. We wish you a happy new year, and we'll see you in 2015!
