Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Remembering Jerry Stiller

We're dedicating today's Throwback Thursday post in memory of actor/comedian Jerry Stiller, who died Monday at the age of 92.

We have fond memories of Stiller, who used his training as an actor to create many comedic roles on stage, screen, and television.

As Peter Keepnews wrote in the New York Times,
Mr. Stiller’s accomplishments as an actor were considerable. He appeared on Broadway in Terrence McNally’s frantic farce “The Ritz” in 1975 and David Rabe’s dark drama “Hurlyburly” in 1984. Off Broadway, he was in “The Threepenny Opera”; in Central Park, he played Shakespearean clowns for Joseph Papp; onscreen, he was seen as a police detective in “The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three” (1974) and Divine’s husband in John Waters’s “Hairspray” (1988). But he was best known as a comedian.
The team of Stiller and Meara was for many years a familiar presence in nightclubs, on television variety and talk shows, and in radio and television commercials, most memorably for Blue Nun wine and Amalgamated Bank.
Years after the act broke up, Mr. Stiller captured a new generation of fans as Frank Costanza, the short-tempered and not entirely sane father of Jason Alexander’s George, on the NBC series “Seinfeld,” one of the most successful television comedies of all time.
Just a few months after the final episode of “Seinfeld” (in which Frank had one last moment in the spotlight, spending most of it yelling), broadcast on May 14, 1998, Mr. Stiller was back on television playing another off-kilter father — a marginally more restrained version of Frank Costanza — on another sitcom, “The King of Queens,” which made its debut that fall on CBS.
While his characters were not explicitly Jewish, there was no mistaking his ethnicity in all of  his roles. Although the ethnic and religious differences between Stiller and his wife Anne Meara were ever present and accounted for much of their appeal, when it came to religious affiliation in their 61-year-long marriage, they agreed to live a Jewish life.

As Allison Kaplan Sommer wrote in Haaretz,
After Meara died in 2015, the Jewish Women’s Archive noted that their relationship had been a groundbreaking one. Most Christian women in the ’50s who married Jewish men converted before marriage and took their husband’s names. Meara, still Catholic when the couple married in 1954, converted to Judaism before the birth of her children – Amy, and the actor/director Ben Stiller – so her kids “would know who they were,” she explained.
Ben Stiller once commented that it was his mother who “knew more about Judaism than our entire family combined.”
Here is the famous skit that Stiller and Meara performed on the Ed Sullivan Show, and went on to create skits to follow the course of their relationship.

Enjoy!

You Know You Are Dating an Israeli Man When...

There's a YouTube channel called Dating Beyond Borders that focuses on dating around the world. It has some funny insights into dating in different cultures.

The format is "You know you are dating an ____ man or woman when..." and then shows some stereotypical examples of dating situations.

One of the countries they profile is Israel and illustrate what it means to date an Israeli with video vignettes of dates in progress.

Back in October we posted a video vignette called You know you are dating an Israeli woman when...

Today we're back with the reverse situation: You know you are dating an Israeli man when...

Are they exaggerating? You probably know the truth.

Enjoy!

Evolution of Jewish Dating: From Eliezer's Shidduch for Yitzchak and Rivkah to the Robotic Future

Jewish matchmaking has been going on for thousands of years, and it comedians Meir Kay and Mendy Pellin have collaborated in a survey of the Jewish dating scene from Biblical times to the present day.

Starting with Eliezer's quest for a bride for Yitzchak, and revisiting the story of Jacob, Rachel, and Leah, the two comics show how the urge to merge has developed to include rabbinic romance, speed dating, online dating, smartphone app dating, and robotic dating in the future.

Enjoy!

"Soon By You" Orthodox Singles Comedy Releases Fifth Episode - "The Wedding"

In May 2016 we posted the pilot episode of Soon By You, a new web comedy series that depicts the joys and challenges of Orthodox Jewish dating for young professional singles in New York City. In July we posted the second episode, and in October we posted the third episode. This past June, we posted the fourth episode. Today we're posting the fifth episode.

In the pilot episode titled The Setup, a rabbinical student named David accepts a blind date at a restaurant in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. While there he accidentally sits down across from Sarah Feldman, a free-spirited artist with whom he instantly connects, but that's not his date. Through a series of different events he’s eventually led to the “right” girl, also named Sarah, a larger than life superficial-type character, who is so caught up with ordering food and herself to actually catch the nuances and humor of his excuses that led him to be late.

This situation leads to a not-so-typical romantic encounter with David and Sarah F, who take short breaks from their respective dates to meet at the back of the restaurant, where they dream up mural ideas and finish each other’s sentences. It’s an example of a matchmakers' worst nightmare and how chemistry leads the way to a potential match. Get ready to cry, laugh, be amused, and, watch the "fun" filled life of Orthodox dating.

In the second episode, The Follow Up, David loses Sarah F's phone number. With the help of his roommate, Z, he is willing to do anything to find her. Two new characters are introduced and we spend more time with the original four characters.

In the third episode, The Shabbat Meal, David goes to great lengths to see Sarah F again. Meanwhile Ben faces his first conflict between work and faith.

In the fourth episode, The Dates, David and Sarah finally go on their first date. Jacobs explores foreign avenues for a love connection and Noa, Ben, and Z take up volunteering.

In the latest episode, The Wedding, David and Z crash a wedding with the intention of wooing Sarah, but don't get the reception they expect. Jacobs and Noa face the pressures of being single at a Jewish wedding firsthand. Meanwhile, Ben begins to process some unfamiliar feelings, and Sarah learns about a family member's relationship issues.

Our guess is that we will be following these characters through a series of romantic adventures, that is if the filmmakers find sources of funds to continue producing the series. They've already been successful in attracting some product and service providers and incorporating their placement into the story line.

Enjoy!

The Perks of Dating a Jewish Girl

Buzzfeed, the global news and entertainment company, has rolled out just about all of the stereotypes in posting a video on the benefits of dating a Jewish girl.
- She's direct
- She loves to feed people
- She's not a pushover
- She's a great schmoozer

They may be sterotypes. But they're funny. And generally true.

Enjoy!

"Soon By You" Orthodox Singles Comedy Releases Fourth Episode - "The Dates"

In May 2016 we posted the pilot episode of Soon By You, a new web comedy series that depicts the joys and challenges of Orthodox Jewish dating for young professional singles in New York City. In July we posted the second episode, and in October we posted the third episode.

Your reactions to the comedy were very positive, and so we have been watching for new episodes to show up. Last week the fourth episode, The Dates, was released, and we're sharing it with you today.

Free Yenta iPhone App Finds Jewish Dates by Location

There's a new entry in the Jewish matchmaking business. It's Yenta, a free app for users of the iPhone by Findr Interactive. What makes it different from JDate and its competitors is its location-based technology.

As the website of its developer says, Yenta is a free location based mobile phone application that connects Jewish singles with other singles near them! It’s serendipity at its best, whether at school, work or a local hangout. You can instantly see who is Jewish, single and wants to meet near you. And when you change your location, a new set of singles appears based on their proximity to you so never miss a potential match!

Yenta is available for use on all iPhone models and iPads. It's downloadable from iTunes.

In this video, New York Post reporter Tara Palmeri demonstrates the use of the Yenta app as she finds a potential Jewish date on the streets of New York.
