Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Billy Crystal as Howard Cosell's Mother on Saturday Night Live

Sports announcer Howard Cosell hosted Saturday Night Live on April 13, 1985. Hosts on the show typically were included in comedy skits featuring their roles in the entertainment industry, and this one was no exception.

Cosell, born Howard Cohen in 1918, was best known for his distinctive staccato voice, accent, syntax, and cadence, and they became the basis of a skit portraying Cosell's Bar Mitzvah, where he played the role of his lawyer father, Morris Cosell. His mother was played by comedian Billy Crystal, in one of his funniest roles.

Let's turn the clock back 39 years and join in the fun at the reception hall where the Bar Mitzvah was celebrated.

Enjoy!

Comedy Flashback: Billy Crystal Accepts the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize in 2007

Today we're turning the calendar back to 2007 when Billy Crystal gave an acceptance speech on receiving the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain prize.

The Mark Twain Prize recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist and creator of memorable characters, Samuel Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled and outraged many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said "against the assault of laughter nothing can stand."

Billy delivered a memorable speech in which he used his impeccable sense of humor to express gratitude for the honor and also to give some insight into his personal life and special thanks to his wife and daughters.

Comic Relief: Billy Crystal Casts Audience Members in a 1950s African Movie

In 1994 in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Billy Crystal was performing on stage and decided to have some fun with his audience. He invited three audience members to join him in doing sound effects to enhance his re-enactment of a scene from a classic African movie.

One audience member used her hands to crunch a huge bowl of potato chips to make the sound of Crystal walking. Two others volunteered to make jungle bird calls. And the show went on.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Billy Crystal's Night Watchman SNL Skit in 1984

Today we're turning the clock back 36 years to 1984 when Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest played night watchmen Willie and Frankie on Saturday Night Live.

In the recurring sketch, two good friends have meandering discussions in a variety of settings that inevitably drift into detailed anecdotes of grotesquely painful self-abuse. The men each complete the other's statements, correctly assuming increasingly outlandish scenarios.

The characters periodically made some version of the remark "Don't ya hate it when that happens?" as though the pain they inflicted on themselves was a matter of bad luck.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Billy Crystal Standup from 1977

On this Throwback Thursday we're going back 42 years to 1977 and a standup comedy performance by Billy Crystal on the TV show Midnight Special.

In this set, Billy makes fun of leisure suits, Nehru jackets, corduroy on college campuses, getting phony proof of age, and dealing with a malfunctioning microphone at the senior class high school assembly.

Throwback Thursday Passover Special: Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy Explains Passover (With a Little Help from Billy Crystal)

We're glad that today, the day before the Passover seder, is Throwback Thursday because it lets us turn back the clock to 2015 and let us revisit one of our favorite Saturday Night Live skits.

It's the one when Billy Crystal paid a surprise visit to Michael Che's interview of Vanessa Bayer in the role of Jacob the Bar Mitzvah boy.

In the skit, Jacob gives a deadpan explanation of Passover. Watching Billy in his role, it quickly becomes apparent where Jacob got his quirky and awkward style of reading his script and handling his interviewer.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Billy Crystal as Miracle Max in "The Princess Bride"

In the 1987 film The Princess Bride, Billy Crystal wore so much makeup that it was hard to recognize him in his role as Miracle Max, the crooked old healer living in the woods with his wife, played by Carol Kane.

And just listening to his voice made us think that the role was being played by Mel Brooks as the 2000 year old man.

But it really is Billy Crystal as Miracle Max. As Eric Grundhauser wrote in a 2015 article,
Over just three days of shooting in the tightly packed set of Max’s hovel, Crystal’s performance managed to nearly shut down the production. Given pretty much free reign by Reiner, Crystal became a show-stopping gag factory. In his book, Elwes remembers, “For three days straight and ten hours a day, Billy improvised thirteenth-century period jokes, never saying the same thing or the same line twice.”
Most of the manic energy and “medieval stand-up,” like the classic MLT sandwich line (mutton, lettuce, tomato), made it to the screen, but Crystal came up with some racier lines that had to be cut. One deleted scene includes the line “Never rush me. I had a very rough night. I found my oldest nephew with a sheep.”
In another deleted scene, Crystal can be seen mugging for the camera, sparking hooting laughter from the cast and crew out of view. This actually became a pretty big problem as reactions to Crystal’s ad-libs kept ruining the sound during takes. Reiner himself eventually had to leave the set and watch the takes from a monitor because he couldn’t keep from bursting into loud laughter. Even more troublesome was Elwes, who had to lay stock still on a table in Max’s hovel, hovering near death. Crystal was so funny that Elwes couldn’t contain himself either, and had to be replaced with a dummy in some shots.
Only Patinkin was able to keep a straight face for the shots, but it cost him. As he says in Elwes’ book, he was clenching so hard to keep from laughing that he actually bruised a rib.
It should also be noted that Max’s scenes would not have been half as memorable and funny were it not for actress Carol Kane who played opposite Crystal as his shrieking harridan of a wife, Valerie. Nearly unrecognizable under her prosthetics, Kane held her own against Crystal’s onslaught. In a movie brimming with catchphrases (“as you wish,” “you killed my father, prepare to die,” etc.), the real miracle behind Miracle Max is that he is remembered at all.
Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Billy Crystal and Carl Reiner Remember Sid Caesar

Without Sid Caesar, comedy would have been a lot less funny.

In 1949, television was an infant technology. No one knew how long it would last ... or whether it would last at all.

A 27-year-old Broadway star, along with a team of writers and performers who would become legendary, including Imogene Coca, Nanette Fabray, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Larry Gelbart, Neil Simon, and Woody Allen, revolutionized sketch comedy by telling stories rooted in the human condition. They redefined television sketch comedy, and paved the way for landmark comedy shows like Saturday Night Live.

Sid Caesar – The Works is a just released collection of the best work of Caesar and his teams, beginning with The Admiral Broadway Review, through Your Show Of Shows and Caesar's Hour, and featuring many interviews and extras, including the 2014 Paley Center For Media Tribute with Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Billy Crystal.

We just ordered this 5 disc, 11 hour set and look forward to watching it soon. We'll try to share whatever we can from it in the coming weeks and months.

In this clip, Billy Crystal talks about his introduction to Sid Caesar and his unique comedy.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Special: Billy Crystal's Australian Interview

Billy Crystal appeared on the "Denton" show in Sydney, Australia in 1994. He was in Australia promoting his new film "City Slickers 2".

Host Andrew Denton gave Billy a genuine kangaroo scrotum pouch, the watch from "City Slickers 1" and a boomerang which Andrew threw into Sydney Harbor.

Join us in the time machine as we go back 23 years to see this Billy Crystal interview.

Throwback Thursday: When Billy Crystal Met Miss Piggy in a Re-creation of "I'll Have What She's Having"

When Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan performed the famous "I'll have what she's having" scene at Katz's Deli in the 1989 R-rated film When Harry Met Sally, it became a natural choice for parodies and spoofs.

One of the copycat versions that succeeded in adapting the scene for general audiences including children was aired in 1996 on Muppets Tonight, a continuation of Jim Henson's The Muppet Show.

To get a G rating, the writers of Muppets Tonight made a small but significant change in the dialog so the act that Miss Piggy was faking was...a sneeze. In all other respects the script  of the remake echoed the original dialog, including the final line, to which a short qualifier was added.

We hope you enjoy this Throwback Thursday video clip that takes us back 21 years.

Vanessa Bayer Shares the Origin of Her "Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy" Character on Saturday Night Live

We have a family Bar Mitzvah coming up this week, so we think it's appropriate to share an interview with comedian Vanessa Bayer, who created the "Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy" character as a recurring feature on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update.

The interview was with Scott Rogowsky on the Running Late program taped last November at Caroline's on Broadway. In it, Bayer explains the origin of the Jacob character, and talks about her own Bat Mitzvah in Israel.

We previously posted video clips with Bayer explaining Shabbat and Passover as she engaged in awkward conversations with news anchors Seth Meyers and Michael Che. If you missed the Passover video, which also included Billy Crystal as Jacob's dad, here it is again, followed by the interview.

Enjoy!

Mel Brooks, at Sid Caesar Salute, Tells of His Revenge Stunt at Columbia Pictures

A couple of weeks ago, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, and Billy Crystal sat on the stage of the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles to salute Sid Caesar.

For an hour and a half they reminisced and told one hilarious story after another recounting personal experiences they had with the master of comedy who died in February.

In this segment posted by the Paley Center, Mel Brooks tells about an incident at Columbia Pictures, where he was employed as a $1000 a week writer, and where he was trying to convince Caesar to make a move from television to motion pictures.

The story Brooks tells is how he got revenge at the Columbia Pictures executives when they fired a colleague of his by simply removing his nameplate from his office door. How did Brooks get back at them? Watch and laugh along with us.

Enjoy!

A Classic Revisited: Billy Crystal, Jerry Seinfeld, and Jimmy Fallon as the "Who's On First" Team

We're all familiar with the original "Who's on First" skit made famous by Abbott and Costello. Last month we posted a remake of it featuring Buddy Hackett and Harvey Korman.

We don't know how many other versions are floating around the Internet, but we were glad to find a version we hadn't seen before with Billy Crystal, Jerry Seinfeld, and Jimmy Fallon.

In this version, the players with the names "Who," "What," and "I Don't Know" make personal appearances as their names are mentioned. The audience at Fallon's Late Night program was roaring with laughter and we hope you will, too.

Enjoy!
