The Great Jewish Songwriters: A Tribute to Irving Berlin and "God Bless America"

Today we're starting a new series on The Great Jewish Songwriters of the 20th century. We'll focus on Jewish composers and lyricists who wrote for other entertainers who became famous singing their songs. 

We have previously featured Jewish songwriters who wrote their own songs and achieved fame primarily as entertainers, like Billy Joel and Barry Manilow.

But can you name the creators of famous songs such as All the Way, Just in Time, Blue Moon, Over the Rainbow, Stardust, and Baby It's Cold Outside?

In the coming weeks we'll profile the unsung composers and lyricists who wrote the songs that make the whole world sing.

Some of our most cherished holiday songs, including White Christmas and Easter Parade, as well as God Bless America, were written by the prolific composer-lyricist Irving Berlin (1888-1989), a Jewish immigrant from Russia. 

In this segment from CBS Sunday Morning, Mo Rocca talks about the remarkable life of Berlin, who wrote hundreds of standards, with his granddaughter, Katherine Swett; Broadway musical director and conductor Andy Einhorn; Josh Perelman, Chief Curator at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, and ultra-Orthodox singer Shulem Lemmer.
