Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: SNL Commercial for Car Smooth Enough for a Bris

On this Throwback Thursday we're sharing one of our favorite Saturday Night Live commercial parodies, the one for the 1978 Royal Deluxe II luxury car with a ride so smooth, a rabbi could perform a circumcision in the back seat.

Well, we found the video, featuring Dan Ackroyd and Gilda Radner, with Garret Morris as the driver, and you'll see it below.

Enjoy, and Mazal Tov to all!

(We apologize for the short commercial that precedes the fake SNL commercial, but that's the only way we could show you the video.)

Throwback Thursday Sitcom Showcase: Seinfeld and the Mohel

In one of the few explicitly Jewish episodes of the Seinfeld sitcom, Elaine and Jerry help friends find a mohel to perform a bris on their newborn son.

When the mohel shows up at the apartment, he's not exactly what they expect. In fact, he's eccentric, somewhat shaky, and manages to cut Jerry's finger in the process.

Here's a compilation of clips from within the episode. Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday: Gilda Radner (as Lisa Loopner) Sings "The Way We Were"

One of comedian Gilda Radner's memorable characters on Saturday Night Live was nerdy Lisa Loopner, who did a lot of skits with Bill Murray as her nerdy boyfriend Todd.

In 1980 Radner starred in Gilda Live!, a Broadway show in which she portrayed the characters she made famous on the show.

In this segment, Radner performed alone as Lisa, taking to the piano to play and sing The Way We Were, the song written by her idol, Marvin Hamlisch.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Danny Kaye in a Scene from "Up In Arms"

Actor and comedian Danny Kaye made his first movie in 1944 during World War II. Yes, that was 72 years ago. It was called Up in Arms. Danny played a hypochondriac who gets drafted into the army and makes life miserable for his fellow GIs.

There's a funny scene in the film where Danny goes to see a movie with his friends and while waiting in the lobby, acts out a typical movie musical including the opening titles and credits.

Enjoy!

It's another Throwback Thursday and it's time to turn back the clock to chuckle with Carl Reiner as the interviewer and Sid Caesar as Professor Hocus von Pocus informing us all on the subject of magic.

This skit appeared on Your Show of Shows on June 30, 1951, 55 years ago.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Woody Allen on the Moose, the Costume Party, and the Berkowitzes

One aspect of Woody Allen's comic genius is his persistence at building a character that audiences can recognize and sympathize with.

Drawing on his own Jewish family, he builds an image with stereotypical Jewish characteristics.

His jokes, stressing his own weakness and neuroses, and those of his family, can appear to be intellectual and anti-intellectual at the same time.

Here is one of his classic standup routines about the time he was hunting in Upstate New York and shot a moose.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Flashback: Victor Borge Teaches Dean Martin Phonetic Punctuation

Victor Borge was a Danish comedian, conductor and pianist who achieved great popularity in radio and television in the United States and Europe. His blend of music and comedy earned him the nickname "The Clown Prince of Denmark","The Unmelancholy Dane", and "The Great Dane."

We featured him last year in our series The Great Jewish Comedians. Borge had many funny approaches to music. One of his most famous was his invention of phonetic puncuation. His unique approach to inserting commas, periods, question marks and exclamation points made every song hilarious.

In this video from 1968, Borge visits Dean Martin on his TV show and teaches him the basics. Then they try the technique out on a few songs, with hilarious results.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Flashback: Buddy Hackett on The Johnny Carson Show

Every Thursday is Throwback Thursday and each week we relish the opportunity to do a deep dive into the treasure chest of old funny video clips .

Two years ago we posted a segment of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show from 1984 where Buddy Hackett talked about the TV censors denying his First Amendment rights to use a three letter word meaning "buttocks." He launched into two jokes that illustrated his point.

We found the second part of that segment where Buddy tells a few more on the same theme. But don't worry, he may get close to the line where censors would pounce but he doesn't cross it.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday: Lou Gottlieb and The Limeliters Explain Rumania, Rumania

Lou Gottlieb (1923-1996) was the comic lead and bass player for the Limeliters, one of the most popular folk song groups in the 1960s. The other two members of the trio were Alex Hassilev on banjo and Glen Yarbrough on guitar.

Gottlieb was a Ph.D. musicologist (he studied with Arnold Schoenberg) working as an arranger for the Kingston Trio when he met his bandmates in 1959. They were strong on harmonies and on funny, high-brow banter, and produced sixteen records during their six years together.

He then bought the 32-acre Morning Star Ranch near San Francisco, which became headquarters for some time of the commune that helped provide free food and health services to hippies in Haight-Ashbury and at the Woodstock Festival.

In 1969, Gottlieb tried to donate his ranch to God, but the court ruled that God would have to appear in person to accept the gift.

We listened to the Limeliters a lot back in the 1960s and enjoyed their renditions of Lonesome Traveler, Those Were the Days, Wabash Cannonball, and the song that they enjoyed performing most in folk clubs, Have Some Madeira, M'dear.

Gottlieb used Yiddish expressions in some of the Limeliters songs. Here is their rendition of the Yiddish classic Rumania Rumania with funny asides during the running English translation that he provided.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Sid Caesar in "20 Minutes for Lunch"

Add caption
Throwback Thursday has become a weekly social media posting trend to let readers and viewers look back fondly on some of their favorite memories -- hence the "throwback" theme.

At Jewish Humor Central, on most Thursdays we've been posting a nostalgic video clip from a very old TV show or movie that brings back happy memories.

Today we're going back 62 years to April 10, 1954, when Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows was in full bloom, and filled with clever skits featuring Sid and his regulars -- Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner, and Howard Morris.

Let's take a few minutes to watch Sid as a shlemazel trying to have a peaceful lunch in a very busy restaurant staffed by waiters who are probably not making big tips. The skit is called "20 Minutes for Lunch" but actually runs only 6 minutes.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Rare Standup by Woody Allen in 1964

Throwback Thursday has become a weekly social media posting trend to let readers and viewers look back fondly on some of their favorite memories -- hence the "throwback" theme.

At Jewish Humor Central, last month we started posting a nostalgic video clip from a very old TV show or movie that brings back happy memories. Now that Passover is behind us, we're returning to this weekly feature with an old clip of Woody Allen early in his career when he spent a lot of time doing standup comedy.

In the early 1960s, before he started down the road of producing, directing, and acting in 65 films, Allen began performing as a stand-up comic, emphasizing monologues rather than traditional jokes. As a comic, he developed the persona of an insecure, intellectual, fretful nebbish, which he maintains is quite different from his real-life personality. In 2004, Comedy Central ranked Allen in fourth place on a list of the 100 greatest stand-up comics, while a UK survey ranked Allen as the third greatest comedian.

For this Throwback Thursday, let's turn the calendar back to 1964 and see Woody in a standup routine talking about his experiences surviving on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Rodney Dangerfield on the Dean Martin Show

Throwback Thursday has become a weekly social media posting trend to let readers and viewers look back fondly on some of their favorite memories -- hence the "throwback" theme. At Jewish Humor Central, every Thursday we'll be posting a nostalgic video clip from a very old TV show or movie that brings back happy memories.

Today it's Rodney Dangerfield doing one of his standup comedy routines on The Dean Martin Show in 1973.

Dangerfield (1921-2004) was a fixture on the standup comedy circuit during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. His appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Dean Martin Show and all the late night shows solidified his place in the world of comedy.

Born Jacob Rodney Cohen on Long Island, Dangerfield (he took the name from a character in a skit on the Jack Benny Show) had a career that went beyond standup comedy to the movies and to his own comedy club, Dangerfield's, in Manhattan.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Groucho Marx Meets Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez

Today we're starting a new Thursday weekly series on Jewish Humor Central. We've been posting a joke every Monday to start the week on a funny note. Now we're also adopting Thursday as a special day as we join the many blogs, Facebook, and Twitter posts that designate Thursday as Throwback Thursday.

Throwback Thursday has become a weekly social media posting trend to let readers and viewers look back fondly on some of their favorite memories -- hence the "throwback" theme. At Jewish Humor Central, we'll be posting a nostalgic video clip from a very old TV show or movie that brings back happy memories.

Today we're sharing an old episode of Groucho Marx's TV show You Bet Your Life. It's the classic episode in which Groucho meets Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, a Mexican character actor who made his first appearance as a contestant on the quiz show. The segment was so funny that Gonzalez Gonzalez was offered roles in movies and became best known for his appearances in a number of John Wayne movies and earned a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Enjoy!
