Welcoming Shabbat with Lecha Dodi by Julia and Amalia, a New Singing Duo

Julia Sabra and Amalia Kelter Zeitlin are two musicians deeply committed to building and inspiring Jewish community through song. They met briefly in December of 2023, but did not become friends until September of 2024, when they were both living in Jerusalem.

One day, a mutual friend told them that they really needed to make music together. They took her advice, and started compiling songs for an album of Jewish music. Some written by Amalia, some by Julia, and some an organic collaboration of their musical minds.

The album is in development, and the duo is looking for sources of funding. In the meantime they are performing in various locations, including this session in a private home in Baka, Jerusalem, where they sing Lecha Dodi for a group of friends.

Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!

Welcoming Shabbat with Lecha Dodi at Mishkon Tephilo in Venice, California

Mishkon Tephilo's historic landmark building on Main Street in Venice, California houses a beautiful synagogue that warmly embraces interfaith families and converts to Judaism. People notice its relaxed and inclusive vibe and find it less formal than other synagogues — as one of its regulars put it, "Hawaiian shirt optional."

Mishkon is participatory and many congregants engage in synagogue services, leading a section or reading from the Torah on Shabbat. Services are held Friday night (usually on Zoom or at the beach), Saturday morning and all holidays, with occasional family services and alternative learning services.

In today's video, Mishkon's spiritual leader, Rabbi Joshua Katzan and Happie Hoffman, Musical Director for BBYO International, welcome Shabbat with Lecha Dodi, a major part of the Friday night service.

Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!

Welcoming Shabbat with Lecha Dodi as Sung in the Shtetl of Mszana Dolna, Poland

Mszana Dolna is a town in Poland, with 7,431 inhabitants. Mszana Dolna lies 50 kilometers south of Kraków. The town is located in a deep valley, surrounded by several ranges, including the Gorce Mountains featuring Gorce National Park.

The Jewish community in Mszana Dolna is mentioned in the 1891 official record of Jewish congregations. However, Jews must have started living there much earlier. The first Jews to settle down in Mszana Dolna were innkeepers, which is confirmed by 18th century data.  Inns were leased to those Jews by the local nobility.

January 17 is the Day of Judaism in Poland. Workshops were conducted with three groups of young people, who learned the basic concepts of the Jewish religion and culture and elements of the celebration of Shabbat.

sztetlmszanadolna.com is a website dedicated to saving the memory of the Jews of Mszana Dolna and building kind relations with the descendants of the few among them who survived the Shoah. Its organizers take care of the sites of memory and martyrdom of the Jews of Mszana Dolna, organize anniversaries of the Shoah in the town, as well as Remembrance Days and Remembrance Walks. Together with the town’s youth they plant crocuses at the mass murder sites to commemorate the youngest victims. Every week they light the Shabbat candles and bake challah and they also light the menorah during Chanukah.

In this video, members of the community sing the traditional version of Lecha Dodi to welcome Shabbat.

Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!

Welcoming Shabbat with Lecha Dodi by Congregation Beth Israel of San Diego

Congregation Beth Israel is San Diego’s oldest and largest Jewish congregation with roots dating to 1861 when San Diego was a frontier settlement. Jewish pioneers first came to San Diego in 1850 and, although very few in number, gathered each year to observe the High Holy Days.

According to the late historian Henry Schwartz, San Diego Jewry, led by Old Town merchant Marcus Schiller, first met in 1861 to form the congregation they called Adath Yeshurun (Assembly of Israel). Beth Israel traces its origins back to the formation of Adath Yeshurun in 1861.

Join us today in welcoming Shabbat with the congregation singing Lecha Dodi by Aaron Bensoussan.

Welcoming Shabbat with Lecha Dodi at New York's Central Synagogue

Tonight we welcome Shabbat with an energetic version of Lecha Dodi by the clergy of New York City's Central Synagogue.

The congregation began on Manhattan’s Lower East Side when its parent congregations Ahawath Chesed and Shaar Hashomayim were founded in 1846 and 1839, respectively, by German-speaking immigrants who hailed predominantly from the Czechoslovak area of Europe. By 1872, the membership of Ahawath Chesed had prospered and grown as the city’s population shifted uptown. When land became available at 55th Street and Lexington Avenue, the location was well suited to them.

With amazing courage and vision, the 140 families of Ahawath Chesed commissioned Henry Fernbach, a prominent New York Jewish architect, to design its synagogue to seat more than 1,400 persons. At its dedication in 1872, Rabbi Adolph Heubsch described the building as “a house of worship in evidence of the high degree of development only possible under a condition of freedom.”

In 1898, Ahawath Chesed agreed to merge with Shaar Hashomayim to become Ahawath Chesed Shaar Hashomayim. In 1918, the congregation renamed itself Central Synagogue.

Central Synagogue was designated a New York City Landmark in 1966 and a National Historic Landmark in 1975. It is the largest Reform synagogue in continuous use in New York City and one of the leading Reform congregations in the country.

Currently, Central Synagogue’s thriving community comprises 2,600 member families.

Welcoming Shabbat with a Bluegrass Version of Lecha Dodi by David Sasso

David Sasso has composed a number of works on Jewish themes. Beyond chamber works from his college years, David has recently composed a choral setting of modern poetry on biblical themes and two setting for soprano and piano of Yiddish poems, including his own Yiddish translation of Wordsworth’s “Daffodils.”

In 2023, David traveled to the island of St. Thomas to participate in a collaboration with local musician and fellow Interlochen Arts Camp alum Gylchris Sprauve, celebrating the many musical heritages of the US Virgin Islands, including David’s own personal ancestry in St. Thomas and his heritage of Sephardic Jewish music.

Also in 2023, David teamed up with Boston-based Jewish bluegrass group, Jacob’s Ladder, to record selections from his bluegrass setting of the traditional Friday night Shabbat liturgy, Sasson v’Simcha - Joy and Delight. This service was dedicated to David’s parents, Rabbis Dennis and Sandy Sasso, and premiered in May 2023 at the retirement celebration of Rabbi Dennis Sasso at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis.

Tonight we welcome Shabbat with a Bluegrass version of Lecha Dodi from Jacob's Ladder's latest record.
