Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Smith and Dale Argue About a Bargain on The Ed Sullivan Show

It's another Throwback Thursday and today we're turning the clock back 69 years to 1952 for a skit that Smith and Dale performed on The Ed Sullivan Show.

In this skit Smith and Dale argue about a $2.85 bargain radio on sale at Gimbels department store.

Joe Smith (originally Joseph Seltzer) and Charlie Dale (originally Charles Marks) grew up in the Jewish ghettos of New York City. Many of the famous comic performers of vaudeville, radio and movies came from the same place and the same era, including Gallagher and Shean, George Burns, Eddie Cantor, George Jessel and The Marx Brothers.

Seltzer and Marks met as teenagers in 1898 and formed a partnership. They named their act "Smith and Dale" because a local printer gave them a good deal on business cards reading "Smith and Dale" (intended for a vaudeville team that had dissolved). Joe Seltzer became Joe Smith, and Charlie Marks became Charlie Dale.

During the 1920s, they became famous for their signature sketch "Doctor Kronkheit and His Only Living Patient," which like "Who's on First?" for Abbott and Costello, became one of the famous comedy sketches of the 20th century. The name of the doctor is an inside joke: Smith and Dale, both being Jewish, named the physician Kronkheit, which is Yiddish and German for "sickness". Thus we have a doctor named "Dr. Sickness". Indeed a hospital in German is called a Krankenhaus, or literally "sick house".

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Billy Crystal's Night Watchman SNL Skit in 1984

Today we're turning the clock back 36 years to 1984 when Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest played night watchmen Willie and Frankie on Saturday Night Live.

In the recurring sketch, two good friends have meandering discussions in a variety of settings that inevitably drift into detailed anecdotes of grotesquely painful self-abuse. The men each complete the other's statements, correctly assuming increasingly outlandish scenarios.

The characters periodically made some version of the remark "Don't ya hate it when that happens?" as though the pain they inflicted on themselves was a matter of bad luck.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca in "The Hickenloopers: The Scented Letter"

It's Throwback Thursday again and today we get another chance to go back to the 1950s and another episode of The Hickenloopers on Your Show of Shows.

Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca starred in many episodes of the hilarious marital tribulations of Doris and Charlie Hickenlooper.
In this sketch, Sid Caesar plays a husband returning from work to find his wife angry with him because she found a lavender scented letter in the mail addressed to him.

No date is available for this sketch, which has only been released on very rare out of print VHS/Betamax tapes. We're grateful to a Sid Caesar super fan who found these tapes, had them transferred digitally, and shared them with a poster who made them available on YouTube.

Enjoy!

Haredi Comedy: Disturbing Daveners

Did you know that there is Jewish humor even in the solemn study halls in Haredi yeshivot? Yes, even the most serious students find room for fun, as we can see in this funny short called Disturbing Daveners.

Davening, or prayer, is supposed to be an intense encounter with God, but there are times when the fervor can overwhelm a person to the point where he loses touch with the world and the people around him.

The disturbing daveners include the Head Banger, Shtender Stealer, and Talis Eye Gouger.

This short film is a product of the Yeshiva of Waterbury in Connecticut, which has a group of amateur filmmakers who bring humor into their lives and share it on YouTube.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca in "The Violin Recital"

Pantomime was always one of Sid Caesar's specialties, and so was satirizing classical performances of all kinds.

With Imogene Coca as his partner in pantomime, In this clip, Sid went through all of the paces in giving a violin recital while Imogene accompanied him on her virtual piano.

The musical composition was Czardas by Vittorio Monti. During the pantomime performance everything that could go wrong did go wrong, including a few broken violins and Sid stabbing himself with the bow.

This video is a very rare one and we don't have an exact date, but it was performed on Your Show of Shows which ran from 1950 to 1954, so it's a Thursday throwback of at least 65 years.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Gilda Radner as Roseanne Roseannadanna on King Tut

Today's throwback skit goes back 40 years to 1979 when the late, great Gilda Radner was riding high on Saturday Night Live with her brilliant cast of invented characters.

One of our favorites was Roseanne Roseannadanna, a character based on Rose Ann Scamardella, a former anchorwoman on WABC-TV's Eyewitness News in New York City. The character also appeared later in Radner's live one-woman shows.

Let's turn the clock back 40 years to 1979 when Gilda appeared as Roseanne Roseannadanna on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update to report on the King Tut exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner in "The Two Hour Old Baby"

Fifty-eight years ago in 1961, Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner, riding high on the success of their comedy album The 2000 Year Old Man, couldn't resist producing a follow-on album called 2000 and One Years with Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks.

One of the funniest tracks on this album is The 2 Hour Old Baby, in which Carl Reiner finds his way into the maternity ward of the UCLA Medical Center to interview a two hour old baby who was born with the power of speech and intelligence.

The nurses have told him that the baby has been speaking nonstop since he was born and Reiner, the interviewer, has been given permission to ask questions of the baby, who is played by none other than Mel Brooks.

We don't have video for this skit, only audio, so you'll have to be content listening to the audio and looking at the album cover. It's still a riot, and we hope you'll enjoy the dialogue.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Sid Caesar and Nanette Fabray in "Shadow Waltz"

When Imogene Coca opted to leave Your Show of Shows to star in her own TV series in 1954, Sid Caesar continued his comedy on Caesar's Hour until 1957, with most of the same writers and actors. Nanette Fabray replaced Imogene Coca as Caesar's co-star.

Caesar's Hour expanded on the format of Your Show of Shows with many sketches running a half-hour or more, including musical parodies such as There's No Business and Towers Trot, and genre parodies such as Bullets over Broadway (a gangster movie takeoff) and Aggravation Boulevard (with Caesar as a Rudolph Valentino/John Gilbert character who fails to make the transition from silents to talkies).

In this Caesar's Hour great spoof of light operettas, Sid struggles to play the part of the dashing romantic figure he's expected to be, while Nanette does her best to cover his gaffes.

The song Shadow Waltz was written for Gold Diggers of 1933 - a Warner Bros. film by Al Dubin and Harry Warren.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Showcase: Ed Wynn and Buster Keaton in "Silent Television"

Ed Wynn was born on November 9, 1886, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania into a Jewish American family. His birth name was Isaiah Edwin Leopold, and he went by the nickname, "The Perfect Fool". His stage name came from turning his middle name Edwin into a first and last name.

Wynn began his career in vaudeville in 1903 and was a star of the Ziegfeld Follies starting in 1914. He hosted one of the first network, comedy-variety television shows, on CBS, and won both a Peabody Award and an Emmy Award in 1949.

Buster Keaton, Lucille Ball, and The Three Stooges all made guest appearances with Wynn. This was the first CBS variety television show to originate from Los Angeles, which was seen live on the west coast, but filmed via kinescope for distribution in the Midwest and East, as the national coaxial cable had yet to be completed.Wynn was also a rotating host of NBC's Four Star Revue from 1950 through 1952.

On this Throwback Thursday, here's a classic comedy sketch from 70 years ago with Ed Wynn and Buster Keaton, best known for his physical comedy in silent films, performing on "silent television."

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Sid Caesar in "The Truck Driver and the Lady"

A lot of the guest hosts on Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows participated in sketches. In this sketch the guest host is Paul Douglas, who had a successful career as an actor and announcer.

No stranger to comedy, he starred with Judy Holliday in Born Yesterday on Broadway. Here he is Imogene Coca's lawyer defending her in a traffic case involving Sid as a truck driver.

Carl Reiner is the judge and Howie Morris a hapless witness. When Douglas swings his cane in a stirring summation, watch for Carl and Sid's masterful reactions.

No date is available for this sketch, which has only been released on very rare out of print VHS/Betamax tapes. We're grateful to the anonymous devoted collectors of Sid Caesar originals who found these tapes, had them transferred digitally, and shared them on YouTube.

YidLife Crisis Presents: "Jews in Cars Getting Babka"

The Montreal-based comedy team of YidLife Crisis (Jamie Elman and Eli Batalion) have outdone Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with their own satire, Jews in Cars Getting Babka.

Filmed under hazardous driving conditions in Montreal's construction challenged Jewish neighborhoods, this satire features Leizer (Eli) racing the clock (and the sun) to drive Chaimie (Jamie) to his parents' house for Shabbat dinner.

After a mandatory stop at Cheskie's bakery for challah and babka, Chaimie gets into Leizer's car, which he has named Hodl, and they shmooze in Yiddish (with English subtitles that are not exact translations) about German and Japanese cars.

Will they get home before Shabbat? Watch the video and find out.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Gilda Radner as Emily Litella with an Editorial Response on Violins on TV

Thursdays are special days at Jewish Humor Central because we try to bring you a golden oldie as a throwback to the days when TV comedy skits were creative and funny and clean.

Today's throwback skit goes back 43 years to 1976 when the late, great Gilda Radner was riding high on Saturday Night Live with her brilliant cast of invented characters.

One of our favorites was Emily Litella, an elderly woman with a hearing problem who appeared 26 times on SNL's Weekend Update op-ed segment in the late 1970s.

Attired in a frumpy dress, sweater and Lisa Loopner glasses, Litella was introduced with professional dignity by the news anchors, who could sometimes be seen cringing slightly in anticipation of the malapropisms they knew would follow. These sketches were, in part, a parody of the Fairness Doctrine, which at the time required broadcasters in the United States to present opposing viewpoints on public issues.

In this skit, Radner gives an editorial response about parents objecting to violins on television. Finally, Chevy Chase informs her the story was actually about the "violence" on televisions, not violins.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Rare 1929 George Burns and Gracie Allen Skit - "Lambchops"

George Burns and Gracie Allen worked together as a successful comedy team that entertained vaudeville, film, radio, and television audiences for over 40 years.
The duo met in 1922 and married in 1926. Burns was the straight man and Allen was a silly, addle-headed woman.

Their 30-minute radio show debuted in September 1934 as The Adventures of Gracie, whose title changed to The Burns and Allen Show in 1936; the series ran, moving back and forth between NBC and CBS, until May 1950.

After their radio show's cancellation, Burns and Allen reemerged on television with a popular situation comedy, which ran from 1950 to 1958.
We found an old short movie skit called Lambchops that Burns and Allen made in 1929.

Throwback Thursday TV Comedy: Harvey Korman and Tim Conway in Airline Security Skit

Here's a Throwback Thursday treat. We're going back to 1974 and a hilarious episode on the Carol Burnett show with Harvey Korman as a passenger and Tim Conway as the gate agent for the no-frills Speedo Airlines.

Harvey Herschel Korman (1927-2008) played second banana to Burnett in many skits during the show's long run on TV. He was a favorite of Mel Brooks, who cast him in four films, including his memorable role as Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles.

Laugh with us as Korman's character tries to get a boarding pass on Speedo Airlines from gate agent Conway.
