Comedy Showcase: Robert Klein on Anthropomorphism

Robert Klein has kept us laughing for more than 50 years, and at 80 he's still going strong as a stand-up comedian and actor.

Klein was born in the Bronx, the son of Frieda (née Moskowitz) and Benjamin Klein and was raised in a "prototypical 1950s Bronx Jewish" environment, the grandson of Hungarian Jewish immigrants who arrived in the USA early in the 20th century.

He narrated the documentary tribute to the Borscht Belt, When Comedy Went to School.

He is now touring the USA with upcoming performances in New York and Florida.

Klein's stand-up skits are still floating around the Internet, and we recently found one from a 1975 HBO special filmed at Haverford College where he carries on about anthropomorphism, or the idea of giving human traits to animals and inanimate objects.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Robert Klein on QVC Online Shopping Pitchmen

Today's Throwback Thursday comedy special features an old routine by Robert Klein in which he takes apart the pitchmen for jewelry knockoff products on the QVC shopping channel.

Starting with a pitch for Diamonique artificial diamonds, he extends the concept to include sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.

Klein was born in the Bronx, the son of Frieda (née Moskowitz) and Benjamin Klein and was raised in a "prototypical 1950s Bronx Jewish" environment, the grandson of Hungarian Jewish immigrants who arrived in the USA early in the 20th century.

Comedian Robert Klein in Funny Routine About Ordering a Kosher Meal on an Airline

Last year the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research hosted an exhibition and panel discussion at the Center for Jewish History titled Professional Jokers: Jewish Jesters from the Golden Age of American Comedy.

The panel discussion on Jews and comedy featured comedian Robert Klein, comedy writer Alan Zweibel, Old Jewish Comedians artist Drew Friedman, The Comedians author Kliph Nesteroff, Jewish popular culture scholar Dr. Eddy Portnoy, and comedian Gilbert Gottfried. The panel was  moderated by comedy writer Frank Santopadre.

We found the complete panel discussion, running for an hour and 40 minutes, on YouTube. It was very funny, as you might expect. Also, as you might expect, the discussion covered a wide range of the panelists' recollections of their experiences with some of the great comedians of our time, some of which venture into territory that is clearly not family-friendly.

Because we try to post only clean comedy we're sharing a short excerpt from the program in which Robert Klein does a funny routine about the experience of ordering a kosher meal on an airplane. YouTube usage rules don't let us cut pieces from a video, but we're starting the video at the beginning of Klein's routine and ending it at the end.

If you don't shy away from really funny adult Jewish humor, you can easily find the whole program on YouTube.

Enjoy!

The Great Jewish Comedians: Robert Klein on the Trials of a Substitute Teacher

Robert Klein was born in the Bronx, and was raised in a 1950s Bronx Jewish environment. After graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School, Klein had planned to study medicine; however, he changed his mind during his studies at Alfred University.

After graduating, he studied at the Yale Drama School when he learned about an opportunity to audition for The Second City. In a piece he wrote for the improvisational troupe's book, Klein recalled sitting in a room full of other hopefuls, including Fred Willard.

Klein's audition consisted of an improvisation set with Willard about two guys in a nightclub, which was successful enough to get Klein and Willard hired by Second City. In the spring of 1965, Klein was chosen as a member of Second City. When he returned to New York City a year later, he was cast by Mike Nichols in the Broadway musical The Apple Tree.

Klein has appeared in such movies as The Owl and the Pussycat, Hooper, Primary Colors, Radioland Murders, Ira and Abby, One Fine Day, Two Weeks Notice, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and The Safety of Objects. He had a recurring role in the TV drama series Sisters. In the 1970s, he hosted Saturday Night Live twice.

Klein starred in HBO's first stand-up comedy special in 1975 during the cable channel's early broadcast days and has continued to appear in several more one-man shows which have typically concluded with his "I can't stop my leg" routine. In 1979, Klein was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in They're Playing Our Song. In 1985, he starred in the "Wordplay" episode of The New Twilight Zone.

Here's a video clip of Klein performing a standup comedy routine on TV in 1973, in which he shared the trials of being a substitute teacher.

Enjoy!

Comedy Flashback: Robert Klein Goes to the Dentist and Takes Us With Him

Robert Klein has kept us laughing for more than 40 years, and at 72 he's still going strong as a stand-up comedian and actor.

Most recently he narrated the documentary tribute to the Borscht Belt, When Comedy Went to School.

Klein's stand-up skits are still floating around the Internet, and we recently found one from 1979 where he turns a description of a trip to the dentist into a barrage of sound effects guaranteed to put us right into the dentist's chair.

Maybe painful, but still funny.

Enjoy!
