Israeli Standup Comedy: Shahar Hason on Peace in the Middle East

Comedians Yohay Sponder and Shahar Hason got their start as comedians in Israel catering exclusively to Hebrew-speaking audiences. As the two became more and more well-known to Hebrew speakers throughout Israel, they noticed a huge demographic in the country that was missing out on the laughs.

Sponder and Hason took the risk of crafting and re-writing their material from Hebrew to English (and from Israeli humor to American humor), all the while unsure whether or not they would even get a laugh out of an English speaking crowd. Their hard work and dedication to broadening the audience of one of Israel’s most unique cultural elements has launched the growing scene of Israeli Stand-up in English.

Sponder, Hason, and some of their friends carry on each Monday at the Comedy Bar in Tel Aviv with their standup comedy show, Funny Monday. Here is a recent performance by Shahar Hason on the subject of peace in the Middle East.

Comedy Showcase: Orthodox Israeli Comedian Chava Darski Kovacs

Chava Darski Kovacs grew up in Canada and made Aliyah to Israel. She lives in the Haredi community of Tel Tzion with her husband and seven children. She is one of a new generation of religious women standup comics who perform at David Kilimnick's Off the Wall Comedy Theater at the King Solomon Hotel in Jerusalem.

Here is an excerpt from her standup routine. Not exactly an Israeli equivalent of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, she nevertheless gets laughs at a community talent night with funny observations about her life.

Chava will be performing on Sunday January 5 along with two other religious Jewish standup comics at David's Comedy Theater in Jerusalem.

Comedy Showcase - Introducing Noam Shuster Eliassi, London's New Jewish Comedian of the Year

Stand-up comedian Noam Shuster-Eliassi is the daughter of an Iranian-born Jewish mother, and a father who was born in Jerusalem to Holocaust survivor parents from Romania.

A month ago she was named “Best New Jewish Comedian of the Year” in a competition sponsored by London’s JW3 Jewish Community Center.

Much of her comedy relates to her atypical Israeli upbringing and lifestyle. As a tall, dark-skinned woman who speaks Hebrew and Arabic fluently, with a name that is more commonly a boy's name, she entertains audiences with stories about her grandmother, parents, and cousins.

As Tzafi Haar wrote in Haaretz,
Recently, comedian Noam Shuster-Eliassi gave one of her most fraught standup performances in East Jerusalem, before an entirely Palestinian audience. After the standup comedian who had invited her there, Amer Zahr, introduced her to the audience (“Today for the first timewe have a Jewish sister with us”), the tension reached a peak, she says.
“I go up, in front of an audience of 300 people, and in front there are two guys sitting with their arms crossed, looking at me angrily. I looked straight at them and said: ‘Don’t worry. I’ll be here for seven minutes, not 70 years.’ That broke the ice immediately. I left the stage in tears – I hadn’t expected such love.”

Enjoy!

From Israel With Laughs: More Israeli Standup Comedy in Engish

Back in February we started a new series, bringing you some of the stand-up routines from the Chelsea Hotel in Tel Aviv. We know that the language that these comics use it a bit raw and uncensored, but it is typical of Israeli humor. Besides Sponder and Hason, today's video includes bits from Yossi Tarablus.
