Coronavirus Lockdown Brings Wild Boars to Streets of Haifa

During Israel's coronavirus lockdown, the empty streets of Haifa, Israel's port city, have become irresistible to wild boars roaming around, looking for food.

As reported in Yeshiva World News,

Located on the foot of the Carmel mountains, Haifa residents have seen wild boars, which have no natural predators, wandering around Haifa at night for years. However, the problem was kept at bay by hunters who culled the boars.

But when Mayor Einat Kalisch-Rotem (Labor) was elected in 2018, she put a stop to culling the boars and the boars started proliferating in the city and brazenly wandering the streets of the city during the daytime as well.

The problem has recently become increasingly worse due to the deserted streets in wake of the restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic like other cities around the world.

Haifa residents are worried that even when the worst of the coronavirus pandemic is behind them, the problem of the boars will persist in the city.

Israel's Technion Students Use Robotics and Technology to Celebrate Hanukkah

Nobody can accuse the students and faculty of Israel's Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa of taking the easy way out when it comes to observing Jewish holidays.

Through the years we've posted their unique videos of technology experiments for Hanukkah and Passover. Now they have a new take on all aspects of celebrating Chanukah....making latkes, spinning a dreidel, acting out the battle of Maccabees and Greeks, making sufganiyot (jelly donuts), and lighting the Chanukah menorah. 

And all without a human touch. Well, almost all. They still needed a team member to place the shamash in its central place in the Chanukiyah.

Israel Off the Beaten Track: Nisco Museum of Mechanical Music in Ein Hod

The first time you visit Israel, it's a given that you're going to go to the Western Wall, Masada, Yad Vashem, the Diaspora Museum, Dizengoff Square, and all of the other mandatory destinations on the tourist itinerary.

But after you've made the trip multiple times and get to make contact with the people who live here, you'll find many off the beaten track places that don't show up in the travel guides.

They include the Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory that we visited in a post a few days ago, the Israel Puppet Center in Holon that we wrote about in 2011, and The Nisco Museum of Mechanical Music in Ein Hod.  This museum, about 20 minutes from Haifa, contains the finest collections of antique music boxes and other mechanical musical instruments in the Middle East.
The collection, which was accumulated over 40 years by Nisan Cohen, the founder of the Nisco Museum, contains music boxes, hurdy gurdies, an automatic organ, a reproducing player piano, a collection of 100 year old manivelles, gramophones, hand operated automatic pianos and many other antique musical instruments.

It's open every day from 10 am to 5 pm. Guided tours are conducted every hour. Groups require reservations.

Israel's Technion Students Give Us a Rube Goldberg Seder

Technion students are always eager to demonstrate their scientific and engineering talents, and the Jewish holidays give them the opportunity to apply their knowledge in humorous ways.

Their creativity flourishes on Chanukah, and we have posted some of their funny videos on Chanukah and also on Rosh Hashanah.

This year, as they get ready for Passover, the festival of freedom, they let their imagination run wild. Watch closely as this Rube Goldberg Machine created by students from the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Architecture and Town Planning relates highlights of the Passover story.

The video was produced in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in The Sydney & Shirley Gendel and Emanuel Friedberg Family Creative Design Student Laboratory, a Project of the American Technion Society, Cleveland Chapter
