Sunday Standup Comedy Showcase: An Early Appearance by Buddy Hackett

Some of the best standup comedy was on TV shows and comedy specials in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Today we continue our Sunday Standup series, sharing some of the classic routines by iconic comedians on Sunday editions of Jewish Humor Central.

Buddy Hackett (1924-2003) was one of the funniest comedians ever to perform on hotel stages in the Catskills. Most people remember him for his jokes and stories that usually crossed the line into family-unfriendly territory.

This one is an early appearance by Buddy Hackett in 1980 on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. In their discussion Buddy expounds on his knowledge of snakes, medicine, organic and natural foods, and psychic phenomena.

Sunday Standup Comedy Showcase: David Brenner's First TV Appearance 55 Years Ago

Some of the best standup comedy was on TV shows and comedy specials in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Today we continue our Sunday Standup series, sharing some of the classic routines by iconic comedians on Sunday editions of Jewish Humor Central.

David Brenner was born to Jewish parents in 1936 and raised in poor areas of South and West Philadelphia. His father, Louis, was a vaudeville comedian, singer and dancer performing under the stage name of Lou Murphy, who gave up his career and a film contract in order to please Brenner's grandfather, a rabbi, who objected to his working on Shabbat.

After making his national television debut in 1971, on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, he became the show's most frequent guest, with 158 appearances. He guest-hosted for Johnny Carson 75 times between 1975 and 1984, placing him fifth on the list of Carson's most frequent guest hosts.

Here's the video clip of Brenner's first appearance on Carson's show on January 8, 1971.

Sunday Standup Comedy Showcase: Andy Kaufman's First Appearance on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show

It's hard to believe, but Andy Kaufman has been gone for 41 years. Kaufman, for all the funny characters he portrayed, insisted on being known as a song-and-dance man.

According to his Wikipedia biography, Kaufman "was a popular and eccentric American entertainer, actor and performance artist."

"Elaborate ruses and pranks were major elements of his career. His body of work maintains a cult following and he continues to be respected for his original material, performance style, and unflinching commitment to character."

Kaufman came to prominence with his "Mighty Mouse" routine on the first Saturday Night Live show. He portrayed a garage mechanic from an unidentified European country on the sitcom Taxi, which also starred Danny DeVito and Jewish actors Judd Hirsch (Alex) and Carol Kane (Simka) and featured Dr. Joyce Brothers as herself in this episode.

The character he played on Taxi, Latka Gravas, had a Jewish and Eastern European feel to it even though it was never specific. The dialect, language and rituals were all made up, but whatever your ethnicity, they made it seem that they captured some of the flavor of the "old country", whatever it was.

Kaufman was born in New York City and grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in Great Neck, Long Island. He died at the age of 35 from a rare form of lung cancer. For years his fans thought he was faking his death as another elaborate prank.

Here is a video of Kaufman's first appearance on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show in 1977 when he was only 28 years old.

Sunday Standup Comedy Showcase: Mark Schiff's First Appearance on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show

Some of the best standup comedy was on TV shows and comedy specials in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Today we continue our Sunday Standup series, sharing some of the classic routines by iconic comedians on Sunday editions of Jewish Humor Central.

When Mark Schiff was twelve, his parents took him to a nightclub. There, live on stage was Rodney Dangerfield doing his act. At that moment, he knew the path he had to follow.

Mark has headlined in all the major casinos and clubs across the country and has appeared many times on both The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with David Letterman. He has had both HBO and Showtime specials and has been the featured act at the Montreal Comedy Festival.

Since we're now in the 100th year of Jewish Book Month, we'll be sharing  information on recently published books on Jewish humor and comedy.

Mark Schiff has written a book about his comedy career called Why Not? Lessons on Comedy, Courage, and Chutzpah. Schiff, a long-time touring partner of Jerry Seinfeld, presents a hilarious account of decades of foolery with comedy and acting legends and how he honed his mensch skills in all of life’s arenas.

In the book he tells of how he was invited to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1989. Here is a video clip of that appearance.

Sunday Standup Comedy Showcase: David Steinberg's First Appearance on the Johnny Carson Show in 1968

Some of the best standup comedy was on TV shows and comedy specials in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Today we continue our Sunday Standup series, sharing some of the classic routines by iconic comedians on Sunday editions of Jewish Humor Central.

David Steinberg, Canadian comedian, actor, writer, director, and author, was one of the best-known comics in the United States during the late 1960s and mid-1970s. He appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson more than 130 times (second only to Bob Hope in number of appearances) and served as guest host 12 times, the youngest person to guest-host.

Now 83 years old, David is the son of Yasha Steinberg, a strict, Romanian-born rabbi. He got his start in comedy at the Second City in Chicago, where he did improv for six years. He was known for his funny sermons based on suggestions from the audience.

In this 1968 video clip of his first appearance on Johnny Carson's show, he delivers a sermon based on the lives of Solomon, Job, and Moses. After his sermon, he sat on Carson's couch with Anne Meara and defended his biblical references as coming from a place of respect and warmth.

We first ran into Orny Adams at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. We previously posted a comedy clip of Orny in one of his Showtime specials. Orny has been performing on late night TV shows and other comedy venues, and he's a regular at the Just for Laughs Festival.

Here's an excerpt from his first appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2007.

Wacky Wednesday Comedy Special: A Classic Buddy Hackett Joke with Johnny Carson

When it came to wacky comedy, no comedian could come close to Buddy Hackett. Whether you encountered hm in a nightclub, on television, or in his hilarious movies, Buddy had the talent to make you roll on the floor laughing.

One of his favorite haunts was the Johnny Carson Show, where he made many appearances. There was always a tension between Buddy and Johnny, with Johnny nervous about how close Buddy's joke would be to going over the line where clean comedy ended.

In this appearance on the Carson show, Buddy delivered one of his classic jokes, "I'll do anything for $200."

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Buddy Hackett on the Johnny Carson Show in 1978

We thought that we had run out of Buddy Hackett videos and were pleasantly surprised to find another batch of Buddy's appearances on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show. It's rare to find a Hackett video these days, especially one that's clean.

So go back with us 41 years to 1978 when Buddy made one of his visits to Carson's late night show.

In this episode, Buddy tells stories about an unusual treatment for severe headache pain and his new vegetarian diet.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Rita Rudner on The Tonight Show in 1986

One of the hallmarks of Rita Rudner's comedy is that it's clean, free from the vulgarity and shouting that many stand-up comics find necessary.  Sure, there's usually some sexual innuendo but her delivery is demure, tasteful, full of wry observations, and very funny.

Rudner started her career as a dancer, then switched to stand-up comedy about her dating experiences.  She married British producer Martin Bergman and now they have a daughter.  She is fond of Jewish humor but generally reserves it for when she performs for Jewish audiences.

For this Throwback Thursday we're going back 32 years to 1986 (gosh, has she been performing that long?) when she made an appearance on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show.

Enjoy!
