Ein Prat Fountainheads Alumni Form New Band Called Tandu in Jerusalem

One of our favorite singing groups has been The Fountainheads, an ensemble of young Israeli dancers, singers, actors and artists, all graduates and students of the Ein Prat Academy for Leadership, who have have joined forces to create new Jewish artistic content for today's Jewish World.

Since 2011, we haveposted 12 of their videos to great acclaim from Jewish Humor Central readers. But time passes, and groups drift apart. But the four seasoned original members of The Fountainheads stayed together in friendship, forming a new group called Tandu, performing Israeli classics and new compositions in different styles including folk, soul, and jazz.

As Orri J. Avraham wrote in The Jerusalem Post,
When the homegrown Jerusalem acoustic ensemble known as Tandu began performing in 2014, its subtle style and artistic identity had already come to maturity as a result of many months of playing together as a tight-knit group. Sisters Shani and Yahala Lachmish had met their future musical companions, Jeff Petroff and Ofri Tube, years before at the Ein Prat Midrasha, where the seeds of a lifelong friendship were sown amid a shared study of Jewish thought over the summer. Inevitably, this intensive intellectual encounter soon uncovered yet another shared passion: a common love of singing.
A few lively musical endeavors at Ein Prat and a firestorm of new ideas gave birth to the Fountainheads, from whose waters sprang a series of music videos centering mostly on the Jewish holidays. Conceived as elaborate spin-offs of American pop culture songs, and choreographed with the help of dozens of enthusiastic Ein Prat graduates, these hilarious and surprisingly catchy carols quickly became viral hits on social media, outrageously popular in Jewish communities around the world. The band soon found itself touring around North and South America to perform in dozens of synagogues, where its widespread reputation certainly preceded it.
The very name Tandu – Aramaic for “together” – alludes to their penchant to combine ostensibly incompatible melodies and genres into entirely new concepts.
“We are trying to conceive of music that is unbounded by any single form. Superimposing separate styles that may seem to be at odds can actually come out as something totally unexpected and moving,” Petroff explains. His own original meshing of the Jewish Wayfarer’s Prayer into a beautiful soft-rock segment perhaps best demonstrates this notion.
“We still struggle with our identity as a band,” Shani elaborates. “We are often asked to define our brand of music, but find it very difficult to do so without doing it an injustice. We just tell them: Come to our shows and see for yourself.”
Here is a video of Tandu performing the song Mila Tova, which includes a taste of Stevie Wonder's I Just Called to Say I Love You.

Enjoy!

The Minions Help the Ein Prat Fountainheads Celebrate Shabbat

The Fountainheads, the Israeli singing and dancing group from the Ein Prat Academy for Leadership, have released many music videos in recent years. But we haven't seen any new videos from them lately.

We count them among our favorites in performing Jewish music, so we were very pleased to see that a couple of weeks ago they released a new music video featuring "The Minyans", actually members of their ensemble dressed in costumes to evoke the happy feelings that the yellow Minions creatures populating three recent movies produce. And the focus of the medley of song parodies is the joy of Shabbat.

It's good to see the Fountainheads back in action again, with a new group of students joining the original group. We're looking forward to seeing some more productions from them.

Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!

Ein Prat Fountainheads Release New Interactive Musical Video of the Exodus From Egypt

And now for something completely different. The Fountainheads, a group of graduates and students from Midreshet Ein Prat in the Judean desert, have released Escape From Egypt, a new Passover video with interactive features.

The very talented Fountainheads, whose music videos we have shared in previous years for Passover, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Purim, Rosh Hashanah, and Israel Independence Day, are breaking ground with an internet video that lets you choose the direction of the action.

In the style of the Choose Your Own Adventure series of children's books, the action stops at six points and you're asked to choose what happens next. It's a lot of fun, and it's the most elaborate Passover video we've seen so far. The singing, acting, choreography, and costumes make this a winner.

Through their videos and live performances, the Fountainheads' work is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. The Fountainheads perform at special events, trips, concerts, weddings, and simchas in Israel, and also tour overseas a few times a year.

Because this is an interactive video, we can't embed it in Jewish Humor Central like the videos that we share every day. You'll have to take an extra step to see it, but trust us, it will be worth the effort.

All you have to do to see it is click on the words Escape From Egypt, and you'll be at the Fountainheads' website where clicking on the arrow in the center of the page will start the action. (PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO WATCH THIS VIDEO FROM AN IPAD OR IPHONE YOU WILL HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE FREE INTERLUDE PLAYER APP FROM THE APPLE APPSTORE.) Enjoy!

Fountainheads Kick Off Israel Independence Week With Song of Hope

Report from Jerusalem:

Yom Ha'atzmaut -- Israel Independence Day. It's coming up next Tuesday, and Jerusalem is all aglow with anticipation. It's the 65th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, and at the age of 65, the country is not ready for retirement. Cranes are visible all over, new apartment houses are going up, and everyone is in high spirits.

Israeli flags are being distributed in the streets and sold in supermarkets, and many cars are already flying the small flags that attach to the car windows.

It's a national holiday, the kids are off from school, and barbecues are being planned everywhere. So it's not surprising that music videos are beginning to appear on the internet.

We're starting off today with a performance by our favorite musical group, the Fountainheads of Midreshet Ein Prat, who have been featured on Jewish Humor Central for the last few years with their innovative, ebullient singing and choreography for the major Jewish holidays. This week they released a new video, Hope, just in time for Israel Independence Day.

Enjoy!
