Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Jon Stewart's Stand-up Network Debut in 1992

Jon Stewart is best known for hosting The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015. But before achieving fame as a political satirist, he was a stand-up comedian.

Two years after his college graduation in 1984, Stewart (who changed his name from Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz) started a stand-up comedy career with many late night sessions at The Bitter End and The Comedy Cellar.

Stewart felt his career did not take off until his March 1992 network debut on NBC's Late Night with David Letterman.

On this Throwback Thursday, let's set the clock back 26 years to a video of that appearance.

Enjoy!

Jon Stewart Crashes Jimmy Kimmel's Interview with Bar Mitzvah Kid

When kids have their Bar or Bat Mitzvah they often have some kind of theme. Last week fans of the late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live were treated to an inside look at the Bar Mitzvah of a young man from Media, Pennsylvania named Will Rubin.

Will's Bar Mitzvah was Jimmy Kimmel Live themed, so Jimmy invited Will onto the show where he was surprised by none other than former TV host Jon Stewart.

Stewart's walk-on was warmly welcomed by the studio audience as he added an extra Jewish dimension to the proceedings.

Enjoy!

New York Senator Chuck Schumer Toasts 16 Years of Jon Stewart's Jewish Shtick

New York Senator Chuck Schumer made a surprise visit to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last week, as Stewart prepared to take leave of the show that he has hosted for 16 years.

As Gabe Friedman wrote for JTA,
Conversation about diner breakfast food inevitably led to a Jewish joke, with Stewart quipping to the audience:
“How did you know I was Jewish? For years I have gone out of my way to avoid displaying any of the stereotypical characteristics of our shared heritage.”
“Then Jon, you have failed spectacularly,” Schumer said. “So tonight, I’d actually like to celebrate your membership in the tribe.”
That served as a cue for a concise but hysterically memorable video of some of Stewart’s best Jewish moments on the show – of which there are far too many to cram into a four-minute video. A partial list of the Yiddish or Hebrew words Stewart says in the video includes shalom, mazel tov, schmutz, bubbe, dayenu, shpilkes, punum, minyan, meshuganah and bubkes.
After the video concluded, Schumer asked Stewart: “Now would you show up at synagogue every once in a while? We miss you!”
Enjoy!
