Hevenu Shalom Aleichem has traveled all over the world and has been played and sung in more countries than any Hebrew song except for Hava Nagila.
Choral singing has been challenging to many choirs during the coronavirus pandemic, but some choral groups have persisted in singing while social distancing. A good example is the Coral Brigantino in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
For our 18th post of this popular Hebrew song of greeting and peace, let's take a trip to Braganca Paulista, a municipality in the state of Sao Paulo and watch the safely separated members of the Coral Brigantino sing Hevenu Shalom Aleichem.
Enjoy!

The Yiddish folk love song Tumbalalaika
originated in Eastern Europe in the 19th century, but its exact origin
is hard to pinpoint.
That hasn't prevented it from being sung and played
over and over, not only in places where Yiddish songs are sung, but
just about everywhere in the world, in vocal and instrumental versions,
in cabarets and in the movies.
Just as we have followed the songs Hava Nagila, Adon Olam, Hevenu Shalom Aleichem, and Abanibi as they took different forms as interpreted by a wide variety of
singers, musicians, and dancers, we've been posting many interpretations of this universal courting and love
song. This version is performed by The Sharsheret WIZO Coral , a female choir which has been active since the 1980s, whose members are volunteers from WIZO São Paulo, a charity for women and children. They are amateur singers, but they have already recorded 6 CDs, with Jewish songs in Hebrew, Yiddish and Ladino, and Brazilian songs, in Portuguese and some translated into Hebrew.

Fortunee Safdié Joyce is a Brazilian Jewish singer and composer who performs under the name Fortuna. She has been studying the Sephardic repertoire
since 1992. Fortuna has recorded seven CDs and one DVD since then.
Fortuna sings mainly in Hebrew and Ladino, a language used by Sephardi Jews
who inhabited the Iberian Peninsula until the fifteenth century, at
which time they were expelled by the Catholic Monarchs and scattered
through several countries of the Mediterranean basin.
In this video, Fortuna sings two Shabbat songs, Shalom Aleichem and Adon Olam.
Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!

Alex Michoel Tavares is the new Jewish Music sensation in Brazil. His new
single (cover) music video of Adon Olam was shot at the Synagogue Shaar Ha Shamayim
in Belem, Para – Brazil.
Adon Olam (Hebrew: אֲדוֹן עוֹלָם;
“Eternal Lord” or “Sovereign of the Universe”) is a strictly metrical
hymn in the Jewish liturgy written in lines of eight syllables; more
precisely, each line is composed of two segments of one yated and 2
tenu’ot, which indeed makes 8 syllables. It has been a regular part of
the daily and Shabbat (Sabbath) liturgy since the 15th century.
Its authorship and origin are uncertain. It is often attributed, as
least tentatively, to Solomon ibn Gabirol (1021–1058), who is known for
his Hebrew poetry, but there is no solid evidence apart from the quality
of this hymn and the language appears to be older. It has also been
attributed to Rav Hai Gaon (939–1038) and even to the Talmudic sage
Yohanan ben Zakkai. Although its diction indicates antiquity, it did not
become part of the morning liturgy until the 15th century.
Enjoy and Shabbat shalom!

Our collection of renditions of Hava Nagila
keeps growing and growing. Since we started Jewish Humor Central in
October 2009, we've posted 71 different versions from around the world. Today we're adding a 72nd version by Meninas Cantoras de Petrópolis, a pioneer Brazilian musical group composed exclusively of girls, founded in 1976, in the city of Petrópolis.
After a rigid evaluation of capabilities for Music, which starts
at the early age of seven and lasts three years long studying theory and
vocal techniques, the girls are tested and integrated into the choir.
The
girls have in their
repertoire songs of varied genres, which they evolve into new melodies
and travel with them throughout the country. They also
perform with most of the Brazilian musical artists, and they also
include songs of international musicians such as John Lennon, Burt
Bacharach, and theBee Gees.
...and Hava Nagila. Enjoy!

It's that time of year again. Groggers are coming out of boxes in the basement and Megillah scrolls are being checked and prepared for use.
Next Wednesday evening and Thursday morning the story of Esther will be read all over the world as we celebrate another Purim. With only nine days to go, the Purim videos are starting to appear on YouTube. We'll be reviewing them as they come in and sharing the best with you. We'll start with a video from the Yeshiva Guevoha in Sao Paolo, Brazil. This a cappella La Fiesta was produced by Grammy-nominated composer Shai Fishman, the
creator of world acclaimed a cappella group The VocaPeople.

There are many versions of Lecha Dodi, one of the most popular liturgical songs in the Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat service, and the cantor/chazzan/prayer leader is the one who chooses the melody. Tonight we welcome Shabbat with the song stylings of Cantor Ale Edelstein of the Israelita Paulista Congregation of Sao Paolo, Brazil. In this two minute rendition he manages to include four different versions of Lecha Dodi.
Edelstein has pop artist status in the Jewish community; he does two weddings and one bar mitzvah per week.He studied at the Tel Aviv Cantor Institute, a school run by the renowned Chazan Naftali Herstik.
Enjoy and Shabbat shalom!

Adon Olam, the traditional song that ends the morning Shabbat service in most synagogues, has almost as many versions as Hava Nagila.
We've shared more than 20 versions of Hava Nagila and eight of Adon Olam, two of them from Brazil. The videos and their descriptions are all listed and linked together in our book Jewish Humor on Your Desktop: Jewish Traces in Interesting Places. Today we're returning to Brazil for a third time, with the Kol Haneshama Chorale making their second appearance, this time with an unusual take on Adon Olam. It's set to the Beatles' song Hey Jude.
This group really gets around. They sing in synagogues, clubs, auditoriums, and other locations in Brazil, not all of them Jewish. If you happen to notice some of the wall hangings in this performance, this will become apparent. Tomorrow if you're called on to lead the singing at the end of the service, you might consider this version. You'll probably be surprised by the number of congregants singing along.
