Adam Sandler Captures 50 Years of Saturday Night Live in Funny and Wistful New Song

Comedian Adam Sandler, who spent only five years as a cast member of Saturday Night Live, captured the essence of the 50-year-old show in a funny and wistful new song that he sang at the SNL reunion special Sunday night.

As Katie Atkinson wrote in Billboard,

Sandler started things out with a joke, singing, “Everyone in this room has something in common, all of our lives were changed by this show/ Everyone in this room has something else in common, we weren’t allowed to use the little bathroom in Lorne’s office.” The song — titled “50 Years” — toggled between sincerity and quips, including the line: “50 years of cast members saying ‘I think our cast is the greatest of all time,’ but we all know the first cast is the best.”

He wrapped things up by running through a string of classic castmembers, including late comics like Chris Farley, Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks.

Enjoy!

Borscht Belt Street Festival Comes to Ellenville in the Catskills

Hundreds of visitors poured into the Borscht Belt Museum in Ellenville last weekend for a trip down memory lane highlighting hotels, food, culture, and comedy beloved by generations of Jewish families.

Jeff Fox used to live in Loch Sheldrake and the museum brings back many memories for the resident who now lives on Long Island. “I think it's great. A lot of memorabilia. Love the signs. I remember them all. There’s great memories and food outside at the fair,” said Fox.

Museum-goers spilled out onto Canal Street to sample a two-day celebration of Jewish food and culture including the star of the show-- Borscht--a creamy, slightly sour soup made from beetroot. “It's like the ultimate comfort food, but it's also healthy. Like you feel better after you eat it. Like it's like my grandma would make it, but it's not like fried food. Like, it's delicious, but also comforting,” said Kathryn Levy of Brooklyn.

Israeli "Saturday Night Live" Uses Satire to Skewer the BBC For Their Biased Reporting

Even in the midst of tragedy, a dose of humor can serve to clarify and expose misguided and biased reporting.

Two weeks after the invasion of Israel by Hamas terrorists, Israeli comedy writers went to work creating satiric sketches about the aftermath, notably about the BBC reporting misinformation related to the faulty rocket that damaged the parking lot next to a hospital.

The sketch appeared on Eretz Nehederet, the Israeli version of Saturday Night Live, one of the most popular TV programs in Israel.

As K. J. Yossman wrote in Variety,

In the Eretz Nehederet sketch, which has gone viral since the broadcast on Israeli network Keshet 12 on Wednesday evening, Israeli actor Liat Harlev plays a BBC anchor arbitrarily inventing the number of fatalities from the attack. “More, more” she urges as the figure on the chyron jumps from 500 to 750. She then links to Middle East correspondent Harry Whiteguilt (played by comedian Yuval Semo) who, clad in a press flak jacket, says he’s reporting from the “illegal colony” of Tel Aviv and goes on to describe Hamas as “the most credible not terrorist organization in the world.” Beneath him on the screen a chyron flashes up saying “We love Hamas.”

Continuing a New Series: The Great Jewish Movies - "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz"

Today we're continuing our new series on Jewish Humor Central, The Great Jewish Movies.

Each post will focus on one of the movies produced in the last century that had a Jewish theme, including comedy, drama, and musical genres.

We'll include a brief plot summary, a video clip, and tell you how and where to watch the full movie. Some will be free and others will require a small rental fee.

Today's focus is on The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, the 1974 Canadian comedy-drama film based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Canadian author Mordecai Richler. The movie stars Richard Dreyfuss, Jack Warden, Randy Quaid, and Joseph Wiseman.

Duddy Kravitz is a brash, restless young Jewish man growing up poor in Montreal. His cab driver father Max and his rich uncle Benjy are very proud of Duddy's older brother Lenny, whom Benjy is putting through medical school. Only his grandfather shows the motherless Duddy any attention.

The full hour and 55 minute film is available to watch free on YouTube.  Enjoy!

Jewish Guide on How to be Funny

Everyone knows Jews are funny. But the question is, why? With a history fraught with trauma and persecution, the Jewish people have historically used humor as a “release valve,” and even as a tool of survival.

Jews have used their outsider status and the distinctive characteristics of Jewish humor - self-deprecation, challenging authority, and audacity - to rise disproportionately in the American comedy scene.

Unpacked, a division of Open Dor Media, has posted an interesting video on how and why Jews are funny. We found it informative and want to share it with you.

Wacky Wednesday Comedy Classic: Candid Camera Asks Pet Owners to Take a Shot for Their Dog

Candid Camera was an American hidden camera/practical joke reality television series created and produced by Allen Funt, which initially began on radio as The Candid Microphone on June 28, 1947.

After a series of theatrical film shorts, also titled Candid Microphone, Funt's concept came to television on August 10, 1948, and continued into the 1970s.

The show involved concealing cameras filming ordinary people being confronted with unusual situations, sometimes involving trick props, such as a desk with drawers that pop open when one is closed or a car with a hidden extra gas tank. When the joke was revealed, victims would be told the show's catchphrase, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera."

Peter Funt joined the show professionally in 1987 when he became a co-host with his father. During this time the show was being broadcast on the CBS television network. In 1993, Allen Funt had a serious stroke, from which he never fully recovered. This required Peter to host the show full-time.

The show went through a few revivals. During his time on the show Peter was a producer, host and acted on the show. He also produced and hosted over 200 episodes.

In this classic episode a dog owner takes a pet to an animal hospital for a needed shot. The vet explains that he will give the owner a shot to lower the dog's anxiety. How will the owners react to this procedure?

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Allen Funt's Candid Camera Debuts on The Garry Moore Show

Allen Funt was an American television producer, director, writer and television personality best known as the creator and host of Candid Camera from the 1940s to 1980s, as either a regular television show or a television series of specials. Its most notable run was from 1960 to 1967 on CBS.

Funt was born into a Jewish family in New York City, New York. His father Isidore Funt was a diamond wholesaler, and his mother was Paula Saferstein Funt.

Candid Camera was a regular feature on The Garry Moore Show before becoming a standalone show in 1960.

Here is an episode from the first season as it appeared on The Garry Moore Show in 1959. Filmed at the Army Induction Center in Fort Dix, New Jersey. Army recruits were asked to give three commands -- Front and center, Present arms, and Dismissed. A group of recruits complies with the orders, with hilarious results.

Wacky Wednesday Comedy Special: The "Every Man for Himself" Scene from "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"

Here's a wacky scene -- "Every Man for Himself" -- from a really wacky movie -- one of our favorite comedies, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

The story begins during a massive traffic jam, caused by reckless driver Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante), who, before kicking the bucket, cryptically tells the assembled drivers that he's buried a fortune in stolen loot, under the Big W.

The drivers, who meet by chance, include Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Phil Silvers, Ethel Merman, and Jonathan Winters. When negotiations for dividing up the buried treasure break down, everyone runs to their cars and the race for the money is on.

The 1963 movie runs three and a half hours and it's worth taking the time to watch it all.

Yiddish Comedians Walk into a Zoom: Allen Lewis Rickman and Yelena Shmulenson in a Classic Comedy Routine

Last July the Forward posted some Jewish comedy in their series #ForwardFocus: Talks in Trying Times. Hosted by Forverts editor Rukhl Schaechter, the session included a sketch by Yiddish actors Allen Lewis Rickman and Yelena Shmulenson.

The setup for the sketch: A Jewish immigrant who is fond of cantorial music overhears a conversation about a new cantor named Yankel who is performing in the Bronx. He rushes onto the subway to hear his concert. Of course there is no cantor -- what he thought he heard as Yankel was really the Yankees who were playing a baseball game in Yankee Stadium.

Rickman acts out the role of the immigrant who knows nothing about baseball and is excited to be swept up in what he thinks is an enthusiastic crowd for the cantor but is just Yankee fans headed for the stadium. He spins his story entirely in Yiddish, with Shmulenson translating sentence by sentence into English.

Stand-up Comedians Are Getting Younger - Meet 15-Year-Old Leo Lytel

Leo Lytel, a 15-year-old high school freshman, has been making the rounds of comedy clubs and was a contestant on The Voice. He captivated the panelists on that TV show with his awkward delivery and funny comments on the launching of his comedy career.

Leo's funniest line was that he has already achieved the goals of many comedians -- he has a Jewish writer (his father) and his agent is a girl he used to sleep with (his mother).

Jerry Seinfeld Tells How to Write a Joke

One of Jerry Seinfeld's popular stand-up comedy jokes is about the invention and marketing of the Pop Tart by the Kellogg company. It took him two years to complete writing the joke.

In an interview posted by The New York Times, Jerry revealed the process that resulted in creation of the joke, and discussed the long time involved from the conception of the joke through multiple rewrites in longhand on a yellow pad.

It's a fascinating insight into the effort involved in crafting a joke that will produce laughs. If you haven't heard the joke, we're posting a clip of its delivery below the interview video.

"The Jews Are Coming" - Controversial Israeli Sketch Comedy Series - The Golem From Prague With English Subtitles

In 2014 Israeli satire on TV took a bold step forward with the airing of a new series of sketches called HaYehudim Ba'im (The Jews Are Coming).

Written by Natalie Marcus and Asaf Beiser, the show asks questions about everything, from the Bible to Ben Gurion to the Ashkenazi leadership. Their approach is to  go into the texts and make you think. They say that they give all their subjects a critical look, but they're not attacking, just giving the story a fresh, modern look.

The series ran for three seasons on Israeli TV, all in Hebrew. Some of the half-hour episodes were divided into video clips and published on YouTube with English subtitles. Here's one about the Golem from Prague.

As Esther Kustanowitz wrote in The Jewish Daily Forward,

eyond the sensational aspects of these sketches, there is a deep passion for uncovering tradition and taking ownership of Jewish history. “Traditionally, there is a separation between the secular and religious,” Marcus says. “They [the religious] have the ownership on this story, but they are our stories as well. This is our heritage and no reason we can’t deal with and dig into the material of what made us, our DNA. It’s time for secular people to own the stories and tradition again.”

This call for secular reclamation of Jewish identity and heritage is part of a national trend in Israel. In Jerusalem, the New Spirit youth movement is working to transform Jerusalem into a pluralistic and creative community. Tel Aviv, the stronghold of secular Israeli life, now offers beachside Friday night services by Beit Tefillah Israeli and course offerings at Alma, a secular yeshiva (founded by now-Knesset member Ruth Calderon). In these and other spaces, today’s young secular Jews reclaim their identity, and see Judaism as part of their heritage, even if their mode of connection would never get an Orthodox stamp of approval.

This video clip, like all the others in the series, may offend some readers who are not open to satirical interpretations of the scriptures and satirical views of Jewish life through the ages, but with Purim just a few days away, we hope you'll have a few good laughs as we continue the levity.

Chassidic Comedy: A Chasid, Stuck in the 1980s, is Exposed to Today's Technology

A badchan (a Hebrew word meaning jester that has been Yiddishized as badchen) is a Jewish comedian with scholarly overtones who entertained guests at weddings among the Ashkenazim of Eastern Europe.  Today they are found in all countries with Chassidic populations, including the United States, doing their shtick at weddings.

The badchanim (plural) probably originated during the Middle Ages where they traveled around Europe like troubadors.  They developed a tradition of wedding entertainment, telling jokes related to scriptural and Talmudic passages.  More recently, in this country, their entertainment has included impersonations of Jewish religious figures and American politicians.

Yoely Lebovits is a popular badchan around the Chassidic World. One of his very funny acts is his imitation of Hungarian characters, which earned him the name Pester Rebbe, implying that he is the Rebbe of Pest.

He has also made some funny videos that are popular with Chassidic users of the Internet.
But the Internet has not made its way into most Chassidic homes.

In this video, The Multimedia Genius, Lebovits is stuck in the '80s, seated at a desk with a portable typewriter, a corded desk phone, and a camera as he tries to keep up his side of a phone conversation filled with the language and technical jargon of today.

Enjoy!
