Comedian and Story Teller Annie Korzen on Food and Jewish Women

If there's anyone who knows how to make an audience laugh, it's Annie Korzen, a writer, actress, and performer who has appeared on Seinfeld and other TV shows, and was a regular on Old Jews Telling Jokes.

Korzen began her career as an actress-writer in New York's Off-Broadway scene. She has also worked in films (Tootsie, Stardust Memories, etc.). In Los Angeles, Annie had a recurring role on Seinfeld, playing Doris Klompus in the Florida condo. She also has been on E.R., Judging Amy, Oliver Beene and many other TV shows.

Annie created two solo shows that combine comedy, original music, and provocative issues. One of them is called Yenta Unplugged, a sophisticated 90-minute celebration of womanhood, from the Bronx to Beverly Hills.

She has appeared as a storyteller with The Moth Mainstage in L. A., Berkeley, and Boston, and has been a regular participant at spoken word venues in Los Angeles and New York.

This year Annie published a new book, The Book of Annie, which includes funny stories, anecdotes, and random observations from her life in New York and Los Angeles.

Her colorful stories ring true to audiences who can relate to the experiences that they have had in common. Here is one called "Feed Me" that she shared about Jewish women and food before an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2016.

Wacky Wednesday Comedy Special: Robin Williams Tells the Passover Story in 2 Minutes

Tonight we'll sit at the seder table and retell the story of the Exodus from Egypt. A story that continues to be retold through many different lenses, with the help of thousands of Haggadot.

But nothing captures the imagination more than watching and listening to a personal retelling, complete with gestures, nuances, and sometimes comic exaggeration.

Robin Williams was a master of story telling and in 2002 he did a two minute version of the Passover story in a Broadway comedy show.

Comedian Steve Solomon's Jewish Grandmother Teaches Kosher Laws to His Italian Mother

Steve Solomon is one of America's best story tellers and dialecticians. He delivers his comedy built around the premise that his mother is Italian and his father is Jewish. That's the perfect setup for delivery of a barrage of nonstop jokes and situations involving multiple dialects.

We saw his show My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish, and I'm in Therapy in Florida in February. The show originally opened off-Broadway in 2006, and he has been performing it in many locations ever since.
 
His show has been called one part lasagna, one part kreplach and two parts Prozac. Solomon wrote and stars in this one-man show, combining comic voices, sound effects and astounding characterizations to tell stories of the wacky side of the human condition.

Today is Purim! Actress Mayim Bialik Narrates the Purim Story

Today Jews all over the world celebrate the holiday of Purim. Tomorrow is Shushan Purim, a day where Jews in walled cities (including Jerusalem) have their Purim celebrations.

Every year the story of Purim is retold in many ways, traditional and contemporary. Today we bring you a retelling narrated by actress Mayim Bialik.

You may know Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah Fowler, Sheldon Cooper's neuroscientist girlfriend on The Big Bang Theory, but in real life she really is a neuroscientist who identifies as an Orthodox Jew.

In August 2015, Bialik launched her own lifestyle website, GrokNation, which caters to women and includes wide-ranging topics such as religion, popular culture, parenting, and Hollywood. 

Bialik also mentioned in her interviews that her website's title was in reference to the classic 1961 sci-fi novel Stranger in a Strange Land and was derived from the word grok, which means to fully grasp something in the deepest way possible.

Actress-Comedian Annie Korzen Opens Month-Long Comedy Show Tonight in California

If you'll be anywhere near Los Angeles between today and August 13, you should head over to The Braid, a performance space in Santa Monica which will be featuring Annie Korzen Famous Actress, a one-woman show by actress-comedian Annie Korzen. 

Annie, a childhood friend of ours from The Bronx, has been writing and performing one-woman shows about her life for many years. We have featured video clips from her solo show Yenta Unplugged, some of her storytelling performances, and a joke from Old Jews Telling Jokes.

Annie achieved national attention from her role as Doris Klompus, the annoying Boca Raton neighbor of Jerry Seinfeld's parents on Seinfeld.

As Broadway World Los Angeles reported last week about Annie's new show Annie Korzen Famous Actress,

The show begins when Annie learns of her son's plan to adopt a baby. The event is sure to be a disaster, plus Annie is not thrilled about being demoted from the "leading lady" to a "bit player" in his life. She then takes her audience on a hilarious journey through her resentment of the world's most neurotic mothers, to her "crap" acting career, to her rocky relationship with Judaism, and to her traumas with childbirth which led to a bizarre stay in in a Danish psych ward.

Annie guides us through her bumpy career where each audition leads to new anguish. She tells how one director was looking for "an Annie Korzen type," then hired a perky little blond. "I am too Jewish to play myself," she cries. "When they make a movie out of this show, my role will probably go to Reese Witherspoon!"
