Shofar in the Street: British Actor Marcus Freed Asks Londoners to Identify Shofar

As we count down the days to Rosh Hashanah, today we're posting a "Shofar in the Street" segment with British actor Marcus J. Freed asking London passers-by just what is the animal horn that he is carrying.

Is it a buffalo horn? Elephant tooth or tusk?  Antelope horn? Musical instrument? Something a Viking would use? Then Freed does the big reveal by saying it's Jewish and proceeding to sound an abbreviated combination tekiah and teruah.

The video is sponsored by the Pico Shul in Beverly Hills, California.

Enjoy!

A YouTube Polyglot Tries Out His Yiddish in Brooklyn

The New York Times recently published a feature article about Frankie Light, an African-American Brooklyn resident whose shtick is learning new languages and posting YouTube videos of him trying to use them in conversation in public places.

As Saki Knafo wrote in the article in the Metropolitan section,

Frankie Light is what’s known on social media as a YouTube polyglot. He studies various languages and practices them on the streets of New York, enlisting strangers as impromptu conversational partners. The often-charming results are then posted online. His most popular videos have gotten more than seven million views.

Frankie's adventures in the streets of Crown Heights and Boro Park were a mixed success. Despite his valiant attempts to engage residents in Yiddish conversations, most of them said they spoke "a bissele Yiddish" - a little Yiddish, and said they were more comfortable in English, Russian, French, and Hebrew. But we give Frankie a big "E" for effort.

Jimmy Kimmel Asks Kids on the Street What They Know About Chanukah

Last week on the second night of Chanukah late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel took to the streets of New York to ask random kids questions about Chanukah.

Most children who don't celebrate Chanukah are familiar with the story of Christmas, but they are less educated about the miracle of Chanukah. So Jimmy's crew went out on the street and asked kids who don't celebrate Hanukkah to tell us what they know about it.

- What is Chanukah?
- Have you heard of Jewish people?
- Why doesn't Santa bring any of the Jewish kids toys?
- Can you spell Hanukkah?
- Would you like to meet a Jewish person?
- Do you know any Hanukkah songs?

Enjoy the last day of Chanukah!

What London Residents Think When They First Hear the Word "Jew"

From London comes a social experiment reported on this week by the Jewish News, Britain's biggest Jewish newspaper.

It's a word association game, a device that has long been used by psychologists to reveal a person’s true feelings.

The Israel Advocacy Movement used this tried and tested formula to discover what shoppers at Brent Cross thought when they heard the words Peter Andre and Katie Price (popular singers in Britain) to hipsters, Hindus, pizza…. And Jews.

The responses were mixed to say the least, with the first respondent having to ask a friend, before blurting out ‘money’.

Then ensued a steady stream of predictable stereotypes such as money, gold and Israel, in addition to ‘Holocaust’ and Hitler.

Others resorted to more ‘out-the-box’ responses, such as ‘Jesus’, Christians, ‘really got f****d up’, Ancient, ‘been in the country and in the world for a long time’.

The Israel Advocacy Movement seeks to counter hostility to Israel in Britain by training groups of volunteers and providing them with promotional material at the street level.

Although not all of the spontaneous responses to the question were negative, those that were reveal that the IAM has their work cut out for them.

Enjoy!
