Throwback Thursday Comedy Showcase: Archie Bunker Gets Another Comeupppance for His Anti-Semitism

It's another Throwback Thursday and we found another classic episode of All in the Family in which Archie Bunker displays his anti-Semitic side and gets a Yiddish comeuppance in return.

Edith goes shopping in a department store and leaves without paying for an item. Archie goes to see the store manager to explain that it was a misunderstanding and that the store should not press charges against her.

In his explanation he makes derogatory comments about the names and ownership of the big department stores in town. Archie is taken aback when he discovers that he was wrong to assume the manager will go along with his assumption of common ethnicity to establish common ground.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Showcase: Levy Gets Even with Archie Bunker

It's Throwback Thursday again so we're going back to a classic episode of All in the Family in which Archie Bunker asks Mr. Levy, his repairman, to finish a job that he started.

But it's late Friday afternoon and Levy tells Archie that he'll have to do the job on Monday because it's getting dark and he has to be in his synagogue before sunset at 6:12 pm.

There are a few great lines in their conversation about religion, money, and rabbinic dispensation. But the clincher is the way Levy ends the exchange by getting even with Archie by using a classic Yiddish curse. It's not translated in the video clip, but it means "You should live in a house with a thousand rooms and you should have a stomach ache in each room!"

Enjoy!

"All in the Family" Revisited: Is Archie Bunker Jewish?

In today's politically correct atmosphere, it's hard to imagine some of our favorite TV shows from yesteryear appearing on our screens every week. One of the best was All in the Family, which while attacking prejudice, managed to come up with some funny examples of it.

Archie Bunker, as portrayed by Carroll O'Connor, didn't hide his feelings about Jews, Blacks, Pollacks, etc. But producer Norman Lear and the show's writers were successful in exposing prejudicial attitudes while still letting the funny punch lines shine through.

In this video clip, neighbor Lionel suggests that Archie might be Jewish, and then the fun begins.

Enjoy!

Flashback to 1983: Carroll O'Connor on the Chabad Telethon with Martin Balsam

"Two Jews, Shmuel and Velvel, went into the television business. So they both went to the rabbi, Shneur Zalman." So starts a story told by Carroll O'Connor to Martin Balsam on a 1983 Chabad telethon.

What was "Archie Bunker" doing on a Chabad telethon? Two years earlier a Chabad House had burned down. O'Connor walked by and noticed the devastation. He immediately called Chabad and asked if there was anything he could do.

Chabad asked him to appear on their next telethon to help raise funds for rebuilding the structure. O'Connor appeared with Martin Balsam who played his friend Murray Klein on Archie Bunker's Place, the spin-off series from All in the Family from 1979 to 1981.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Showcase: Sammy Davis Jr.'s Visit to Archie Bunker

One of the most celebrated episodes of All in the Family aired in 1972. It's the classic tale about the time Sammy Davis Jr. stopped by to visit the Bunkers.

It begins with a briefcase he left in Archie's cab and ends with the kiss of infamy.

Very few people are aware that the writer of this episode was Bill Dana, who we all know as Jose Jimenez. Dana's appearances with Ed Sullivan and Milton Berle as an astronaut, karate expert, and Santa Claus instructor were legendary.

Last year we profiled Bill Dana as one of the great Jewish comedians. In the interview below he recounts the backstory of how he came to write the episode with producer Norman Lear.

Just in case you're yearning to see the full 25 minute long Sammy's Visit episode that Dana and Lear wrote, you'll find it right below the Bill Dana interview.

Enjoy!
