Conan O'Brien Throws Himself a Bar Mitzvah Party in Israel

When American comedian and late night show host Conan O'Brien visited Israel last year, he briefly explored the possibility of conversion to Judaism so he could become a bar mitzvah. But he had only 90 minutes to spend.

At Tel Aviv's Tel Baruch Central Synagogue, Rabbi Dov Halbertal breaks it to Conan that he can’t convert to Judaism in 90 minutes — but that won't stop Conan from throwing himself a bar mitzvah party.

A somewhat serious Rabbi Halbertal takes Conan through the actual requirements for a legitimate conversion, but gladly participates in the funny but respectful reactions of the Irish red-headed comedian.

Enjoy!

Conan O'Brien's El Al Encounter en Route to Israel - Second of a Series

Late night talk show host Conan O'Brien is spending a week in Israel filming a Conan Without Borders travel show to be aired in September.

We're following his antics as he boards an El Al plane and brings his comedy to Israel.

In this video clip, second of the series, he has an encounter with the toilet on an El Al plane in flight. After spending an hour and a half in the toilet to get a suitable video sequence, he offers some very creative interpretations of the Hebrew words on the towel disposal bin and lotion dispenser. Meanwhile, an El Al passenger, not known for patience, bangs on the door repeatedly to try to gain access.

We'll be sharing more of his funny videos with you over the next few weeks. Next episode: The Tel Aviv skyline and shakshuka.

Enjoy!

Stand-up Comedian Gary Gulman on State Abbreviations and Contractions

Gary Gulman is a funny stand-up comedian who we featured here earlier this year. We got many requests to bring him back with other routines, so here he is again.

In an interview by the JDate editorial team published online, Gulman reflected on how he includes Jewish themes in his comedy.
Judaism plays an enormous role in my life. It’s a great contributor to my identity. It’s common ground I share with many of my friends and a lot of the people I work with, partially by osmosis — being around people with certain values which my family shares, Jewish values and Jewish culture — as well as going to Hebrew school and reading and learning more about Judaism… going to Israel.
In this appearance on Conan O'Brien's late night talk show, Gulman tells a funny story about a 90 minute documentary that was made about the men and one women who abbreviated all 50 states down to two letters. He'll make you laugh about the crack outfit of abbreviators who got stuck after their first abbreviation of AL for Alabama.

Enjoy!

Actor Jack Black Will Do Anything (Even Sing Had Gadya) to Get His Kids Into Hebrew School

Actor/Comedian Jack Black was interviewed on the Conan O'Brien show a couple of years ago and told the story of how he wanted to get his children into Hebrew school.

Black was born a Jew and is married to a Jew. He considers himself an atheist. He and his wife hadn't been to a synagogue in years, but felt pressure to put on a good show at the school interview. So he referenced his wife's grandfather's Haggadah and sang Had Gadya while the other parents rolled their eyes.

Black then launched into a description of Had Gadya as the original heavy metal song because it's all about the chain of life.

We don't know whether or not his kids did go to Hebrew school, but his Wikipedia entry says that he has started going to synagogue with them.

Enjoy!
