Itay Benda, also known as Itay Ben David, was born in Jerusalem with music in his soul. Enthralled by music
from a young age, he convinced his friends to take music lessons to form
his first band. He’s since gone on to tour around the globe with some
of the most prominent Israeli and European acts as both a singer and
musician.
Currently based in Los Angeles and performing around
the world, Itay brings new meaning and life to audiences as he shares
the songs inside his soul. As a solo act or alongside a band of up to
twelve, Itay incorporates nuances and flavors from his time spent
touring the world.
Join us in welcoming Shabbat tonight with Shalom Aleichem, as sung by Itay Benda.
It's another Friday and time to welcome Shabbat with an a cappella version of Shalom Aleichem. This is the 66th version that we've posted and it's sung by Yonatan Stern and his a cappella group.
Today we welcome
Shabbat with BerKalit a cappella singing Shalom Aleichem.
Founded in 2022 at
Berklee College of Music, BerKalit's name cleverly nods to its origins; in
Hebrew, 'Kalit' (קליט)
means 'catchy,' capturing the spirit of BerKalit's music, while sounding like
'Berklee.' BerKalit are the proud winners of Jewish Star Season 5 and the
singers behind ASMAC critically acclaimed arrangement, "Lecha Dodi."
Alongside
facilitating Shabbat services and vocal harmony workshops nationwide, the group
is thrilled to have released their debut EP in 2025, featuring a collection of
innovative liturgical arrangements. Comprising members from diverse religious
backgrounds united by their love for Jewish music, BerKalit aims to bridge the
gap between Jewish music and contemporary a cappella, foster community through
vocal harmony, and use their voices to uplift the Greater Boston Area and
beyond.
The Shvesters (Chava Levi and Polina Fradkin) are a Yiddish vocal duo
hailing originally from Detroit, Michigan. They gained a reputation on
social media for their perfectly synchronized voices (and signature
matching outfits) — and have won the hearts of audiences from all
backgrounds. The Shvesters transform classic Yiddish melodies into sophisticated, contemporary harmonic jazz arrangements.
In this video the Shvesters welcome Shabbat with a rendition of Shalom Aleichem.
Oxana Bar and Gaston Kirsman, a Jewish-Israeli couple living in Israel, offer
Spanish speakers everywhere a unique and unfiltered glimpse into life in
Israel, sharing people’s stories and experiences with the aim of
fighting fake news and hatred against Israel and Jews.
Their goal is to help Spanish speakers discover Israel in an authentic and
unique way, countering fake news and social media that often portray a
negative image of Israel.
In this video they sing Shalom Aleichem, a key part of the Kabbalat Shabbat service.
Nava Tehila is a Jerusalem-based prayer community that gathers for a big musical
Kabbalat Shabbat once a month in Jerusalem's Baka neighborhood. They create musical and engaging prayer spaces where people feel comfortable to come as they are. All
are welcomed. Their prayer service is innovative, egalitarian and
accompanied by acoustic instruments. It flows between ecstatic chanting
and dancing and contemplative, and is uses mostly their own beautiful original melodies written by their members.
Cantor Jacob Agar received his cantorial investiture at the H.L Miller
Cantorial School at Jewish Theological Seminary of New York. Previously
he studied opera performance and linguistics at SUNY Purchase College.
Following conservatory, he sang with several opera companies in New York
and New Jersey, and has worked with a wide variety of conductors.
Today we join Cantor Agar and Nava Tehila in bringing in Shabbat with the singing of Shalom Aleichem.

Cantor Thom King of Beth El Congregation in Baltimore, Maryland has come up with a unique rendition of Shalom Aleichem, sung to the tune of Ma Nishtana.

The song Shalom Aleichem is traditionally sung in many Jewish households, and asks the angels to protect us and bless us with peace. The Shalva Band has brought together Israeli communities in the diaspora, alongside evacuees from the south and the north, as well as families of abductees to join in prayer, singing together for peace in Israel.
Since 2005, the Shalva Band has been inspiring crowds worldwide. Having perfomed at Eurovision and for the President of the United States, the band uses music as a language to unite people.
From all corners of the globe, we celebrate the unbridled unity of Israelis and Jews around the world, and pray that we can welcome home the hostages for a Shabbat soon.
Enjoy the Shalva Band's version of Shalom Aleichem, and Shabbat shalom!

Shabbat is Shabbat, whether you're in the comfort of your home or somewhere in Israel wearing an IDF uniform.
Today we're welcoming Shabbat with two Israeli soldiers somewhere in Israel, wearing their army uniforms and camouflage headgear, holding a guitar and an Uzi.
We join them in singing Shalom Aleichem and offer prayers for their success in their mission and safe return to their homes.
Shabbat shalom!

Last week we welcomed Shabbat with a bluegrass version of Lecha Dodi by David Sasso and the Boston-based Jacob's Ladder bluegrass group. The popularity of that selection encouraged us to follow up this Shabbat with their version of Shalom Aleichem, another song that we sing on Friday night.
David Sasso has composed a number of works on Jewish themes. Beyond chamber
works from his college years, David has recently composed a choral
setting of modern poetry on biblical themes and two setting for soprano
and piano of Yiddish poems, including his own Yiddish translation of
Wordsworth’s “Daffodils.”
In 2023, David traveled to the island of St.
Thomas to participate in a collaboration with local musician and fellow
Interlochen Arts Camp alum Gylchris Sprauve, celebrating the many
musical heritages of the US Virgin Islands, including David’s own
personal ancestry in St. Thomas and his heritage of Sephardic Jewish
music.
Also in 2023, David teamed up with Boston-based Jewish bluegrass group, Jacob’s Ladder, to record selections from his bluegrass setting of the traditional Friday night Shabbat liturgy, Sasson v’Simcha - Joy and Delight. This
service was dedicated to David’s parents, Rabbis Dennis and Sandy
Sasso, and premiered in May 2023 at the retirement celebration of Rabbi
Dennis Sasso at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis.
Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!

With Pesach in the rear view mirror, and freshly baked challah returning to our dining room tables, we're ready to welcome another Shabbat with a Kabbalat Shabbat service including Shalom Aleichem.
After a busy week of Passover, it's time for another restful Shabbat. Today's Kabbalat Shabbat includes Shalom Aleichem, the liturgical poem that we sing on Friday
evening at home before a traditional Shabbat dinner.
It's the 57th version of Shalom
Aleichem that we've posted on Jewish Humor Central. This traditional version is sung by the clergy of Anshe Emet Synagogue of Chicago.
Anshe Emet is one of the oldest Conservative congregations
in Chicago. Founded in 1873, Anshe
Emet has a long history of being a center for Torah study, cultural
activity, and Israel and social justice advocacy.
Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!

Purim is in the rear window and Pesach is coming up fast, but Shabbat comes every week. Each Friday we post a selection from the Shabbat liturgy to welcome Shabbat Hamalka, the Sabbath queen.

Congregation Beth Israel, the historic center of Jewish life in San
Diego, is an inclusive Reform congregation that offers a warm welcome
and a nurturing home to all who seek a meaningful and enduring

This week we welcome Shabbat with an original adaptation of Shalom Aleichem by Leah Shoshanah, a version that she wrote and recorded in a cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. This very intimate version of Shalom Aleichem welcomes in the angels to create sacred space and time.
Leah Shoshanah is a Chicago-based singer, songwriter & Jewish musician whose soulful, original music deftly navigates the folk, funk, rock and jazz genres. Shoshanah’s original music takes on a life of its own and has inspired audiences to sit spellbound, sing together, laugh, cry and dance.
Shoshanah has played on historic stages in Chicago, like the Old Town School of Folk Music, PianoForte, Martyrs’ and the Green Mill. She has played to audiences of thousands on tour in Germany, put on cabaret-style solo acts in underground neighborhood theaters, led musical meditations, and helped individuals and communities move through loss and celebrate life.

This beautiful rendition of Shalom Aleichem composed by Israel Goldfarb
was arranged by Dan Dance and performed by the band of Congregation Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. Directed by Cantor David Barash and produced by Scott Finch.
Congregation Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun started in 1856 with three tiny congregations that joined together to form B'ne Jeshurun. Thirteen years later, 35 families left the congregation to establish a
new Congregation Emanu-El. In 1927 the two Reform congregations merged.
Mandy Monreal is a Jewish Contemporary Musician with a background in
voice, piano, composition, and education. In this arrangement of Shalom Aleichem, she blends her two
passions: music and faith.
Cantor Devorah Avery of Temple Shalom in Dallas visited Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus in a cantorial capacity
to serve Jewish communities there. She has performed in concerts in the
United States, Israel, Ukraine, and Belarus. Hallie Weiner joins in the vocals and James Darling plays the hand drum.
