Another Hanukkah Video by the Y-Studs: A Jackson 5 Chanukah !

The Y-Studs are an all-male Jewish a cappella group, originally from Yeshiva University. They started as a club in 2010, and have since grown beyond the collegiate level to the professional stage. Before anything else, they're a group of college students and young professionals who love making music together.

They pride themselves on both their energy and their depth, and are extremely deliberate about the music they choose, ensuring every song has both uniquely Jewish undertones and a universally resonant message.

In this new video, the Y-Studs perform a medley of songs with the Motown sound made popular by the Jackson 5 with a unique Chanukah twist.

Enjoy!

A Taylor Swift Hanukkah - The Y-Studs Sing "You Can Light With Me" - A Parody of "You Belong With Me"

Here come the Hanukkah videos!

On this Thursday night we will light the first Hanukkah candle. In the few days before the holiday begins and all through the eight days, we will bring you music videos and Chanukah posts as we do every year.

Tonight we're starting with You Can Light With Me, a parody of Taylor Swift's hit song You Belong With Me with new lyrics in the Chanukah spirit. The singers are the Y-Studs.

Originally from Yeshiva University, the Y-Studs a cappella group started as a club in 2010 and have since grown beyond the collegiate level to the professional stage. You may have seen some of their music videos, like the viral hit Evolution of Jewish Music and their cover Hashem Melech that have contributed to over 10 million views across social media channels - as well as over 38,000 YouTube subscribers.

Enjoy!

Three a Cappella Groups Unite to Sing Prayer for Welfare of State of Israel

When words fail, as they often have after the events of the past weeks, we turn to song and prayer.

This week three of the most popular Jewish a cappella groups -- The Maccabeats, Six13, and J-Studs -- have combined their voices to perform Avinu SheBashamayim, the Prayer for the Welfare of the State of Israel.

Sending comfort to the bereaved, wishes for a speedy return of the hostages, and prayers for the safety for our brave brothers and sisters called up to protect Eretz Yisrael. Am Yisrael Chai!

Welcoming Shabbat with the Y-Studs and Evolution of Shabbat

The Y-Studs, the Yeshiva University a cappella group, has produced Evolution of Shabbat, a video that includes most of the Shabbat songs that we know so well. It's a follow-up to their 2017 video Evolution of Jewish Music chronicling the evolution of Jewish music from the 1600s to the present day.

In this just-released video, the Y-Studs sing a medley of excerpts from the Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service, kiddush, zemirot, Shacharit, Torah reading, Musaf, Seuda Shelishit, and Havdalah.

Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!

White House Hosts Two Hanukkah Parties to Light the Fifth Candle

Yesterday President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted an afternoon and an evening Hanukkah party at the White House. All Jewish members of Congress were invited and the fifth candle was lit at each party, by a chaplain and by a Chabad rabbi.

The party included songs sung by the Y-Studs, the Yeshiva a cappella group whose songs we have posted here on Jewish Humor Central.

The president's remarks focused on our relationship with the State of Israel, recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and the swift opening of the new United States Embassy.

Welcoming Ivanka and Jared Kushner, he said "I'm also proud that the Jewish faith is so deeply woven into the fabric of my family. It's a great honor."

Each of the parties lasted more than an hour, and the full videos are available on YouTube. We'll include the links below so if you have the time you can watch both of them. If you're not inclined to spend so much time with them, here is a short version of one of the parties.

Happy Hanukkah and Shabbat shalom!

Our Jerusalem Celebration Continues with Shai Abramson and the Y-Studs

We're still in Jerusalem, joining in the celebrations and positive vibrations from Yom Haatzmaut, Yom Yerushalayim, and yesterday's dedication of the new United States Embassy a mile and a half from our Jerusalem office.

With apologies to some of our readers who keep asking for more jokes, during the next few days we will be focusing more on Israeli songs and culture to express our pride in this city, this country, and in President Trump's recognizing and echoing the words of King David when he declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel 3,000 years ago. The jokes and humor will be back soon enough.

Today we're sharing a special song, Hineni Kan (I Am Here) by the Y-Studs A Cappella in collaboration with renowned Israeli Cantor, Shai Abramson. It was filmed in and around the Kotel (Western Wall) in Jerusalem, the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City, and at an Aliyah Expo by Nefesh b'NefeshThe Hebrew and English words appear below the video.

Enjoy!

I AM HERE
http://www.hebrewsongs.com/spacer.gif
I walk to you all of my days,
I walk to you dazzled.
The rocks wound my feet
but I don't feel a thing.

I'm returning from an unsown land,
I extend my hand to stroke your hair.
I am here, but like a wounded dove,
I always fall in front of your gate.

I am here, like circling birds,
I am here, looking from the roofs;
I am here, like a stone in the fence,
like a rock, like a well -
I am the one who always returns, returns.

I return in a thousand rolls,
I am a monk, son of a king and a beggar,
and at night in the cry of the foxes
I dream and awake to you in time.

I see you in the distance,
like a captured princess in a tower,
behind bars sitting and waiting
Oh God, the great gods.

I am here...

And you waited, like the rocks,
and like the pit, for a desert wanderer;
soft sunrises kissed your face,
heavy sunsets kissed your neck.

I saw you sitting/standing and waiting so,
and in your eyes, a light and great sorrow,
In this way I took you with me
to the wedding canopy, you're the barefooted one with a crown of gold.

I am here...

500 Years of Jewish Music in 5 Minutes

The Y-Studs, the Yeshiva University a cappella group, has produced a video chronicling the evolution of Jewish music from the 1600s to the present day.

Starting with a brief synagogue melody from the 9th century, the collection jumps to 1600 and a series of 37 songs that paint a musical picture of familiar and most loved Hebrew and Yiddish songs. The collection includes liturgical, secular, and songs from Broadway and popular music. The list of songs appears below the video.

As reported in The Jewish Link of New Jersey,
In collaboration with Ben Bram, arranger of Pentatonix’s original “Evolution of Music,” and some of the best a cappella producers in the industry, the Y-Studs present “Evolution of Jewish Music,” a mega-medley filled with iconic songs spanning centuries of the religion’s rich music culture. Working alongside esteemed Belz School of Jewish Music Yeshiva University, the group researched the vast history of music, from Temple-period chants to modern-day radio hits. Evolution of Jewish Music touches every facet of Jewish culture from 11th-century choral pieces to traditional Yiddish favorites to Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song” and Matisyahu’s “One Day.”

Orthodox Jewish Beatboxers Surprise Judges on "America's Got Talent"

Two Orthodox Jewish boys got a big ovation from the audience attending auditions for "America's Got Talent" last month. Their beatboxing performance was praised as cute and unusual. Unfortunately they were eliminated in the next round.

As Jesse Bernstein wrote in Tablet,
Beatboxing duo and friends Ilan Swartz-Brownstein and Joshua Shlomo Mendel Leviton made a smart choice to call themselves “Ilan and Josh,” because their full names are a mouthful even for members of the Tribe, let alone Gentiles.
Though they “don’t look like your typical beatboxers,” as stated during the duo’s audition on America’s Got Talent, make no mistake: these young men can flat-out spit. Tuesday’s performance was received with thunderous applause from the audience and four “yes” votes from the celebrity judges.
Based in New York, Ilan and Josh met a few years ago at the Kotel. From there, they hit it off. Leviton, who also calls himself “The Orthobox,” provides the beat (he’s even performed with The Maccabeats); meanwhile, Brownstein (aka “The Aleph Bass”), an aspiring religious singer, spits the tune to their creations.
You may find their sound familiar because they previously provided beatbox background sounds for the Maccabeats and the Y-Studs, two a cappella groups that we have featured on Jewish Humor Central.

Enjoy!
