Welcoming Shavuot and Shabbat with an Israeli Harvest Song

Kippalive is an Israeli a cappella group that started out as a group of friends in Raanana who got together every Friday night to sing and were discovered while singing in the streets of Raanana.

We featured them previously in a cappella songs for Chanukah, Passover, and Shabbat.

Finding songs for Shavuot, which starts at sundown tonight, isn't as easy as it is for the other Jewish holidays. But Kippalive has posted an old favorite, Saleinu al Ktefeinu, (Our baskets are on our shoulders), which we're glad to share with you today.

Shavuot is also known as Yom HaBikkurim (Day of the first fruits) and Chag HaKatzir (Harvest Festival). So naturally, the Kipppalive singers put flowers on their heads and sang in a field!

Below the video you'll find the transliterated Hebrew and English lyrics.

We'll be observing Shavuot on Friday and Shabbat, so our next post will be on Sunday.

Chag sameach and Shabbat shalom!

Hebrew:

Saleinu al k'tefeinu, rasheinu aturim,
miktzot ha'aretz banu haveinu bikkurim.
Mihudah mihudah v'ad shomron,
min ha'emek min ha'emek v'lagalil,
panu derech lanu, bikkurim itanu,
hach hach hach batof v'chalel b'chalil.W
hach hach hach batof v'chalel b'chalil.
Saleinu al k'tefeinu, rasheinu aturim,
miktzot ha'aretz banu haveinu bikkurim.
Mihudah mihudah v'ad shomron,
min ha'emek min ha'emek v'lagalil,
panu derech lanu, bikkurim itanu,
hach hach hach batof v'chalel b'chalil.
hach hach hach batof v'chalel b'chalil.

English:

Our baskets on our shoulders, crowned heads,
From the ends of the land we came we brought first fruits.
From Yehuda and the Shomron, from the valley,
And the Galil, make way for us, first fruits
with us, bang the drum and play the flute.

Here Come the Chanukah Videos: Hanerot Halalu by Keepalive

Kippalive is an Israeli a cappella group that started out as a group of friends in Raanana who got together every Friday night to sing and were discovered while singing in the streets of Raanana.

We featured them previously in a cappella songs for Chanukah and Passover.

This year they're back again with an original rendition of Hanerot Halalu, the traditional song sung right after the candles are lit each night of Chanukah.

Enjoy!

Havdalah with Israeli a Cappella Group Kippalive

On Fridays we usually post a musical welcome to Shabbat with a version of Shalom Aleichem, Lecha Dodi, or Adon Olam. But this week we're doing something different.

Because we don't post on Shabbat, we haven't been paying much attention to the closing minutes of Shabbat, when beautiful melodies are sung as part of Havdalah, the ceremony marking the transition from the holiness of Shabbat to the work week.

But there's a rich lode of musical endings to Shabbat, and Havdalah ceremonies around the world reflect the traditional and local musical tastes of each location.

Here's a video to save for tomorrow night at the conclusion of Shabbat. Playing it after dark will give us a reminder of the sweet taste of Shabbat and energize us to face the challenges of the coming week. This version is by Kippalive, an Israeli a cappella group.

They started out as a group of friends in Raanana who got together every Friday night to sing and were discovered while singing in the streets of Raanana.

We featured them previously in an a cappella song for Chanukah in 2013 and last year for Passover and in a Carlebach-style Shabbat service.

Their Havdalah is traditional, but if you listen carefully, you'll notice that they have seamlessly integrated a few bars from the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter themes and the introduction from the pop hit Kiss From a Rose. Can you find any others? Share your findings in the comments section below.

Enjoy, Shabbat shalom, and Shavua tov!

Passover Videos: Israeli a Cappella Group KippaLive Sings Vehi She'amda with When You Believe

As we get ready to celebrate Pesach with the first seder tonight (and the first and only seder tonight in Israel) we selected an a cappella combination of Vehi She'amda from the text of the Haggadah with the song When You Believe from the soundtrack of the movie Prince of Egypt, as sung by KippaLive.

KippaLive is an Israeli a cappella group that started out as a group of friends in Raanana who got together every Friday night to sing and were discovered while singing in the streets of Raanana. We have featured them previously in an a cappella song for Chanukah in 2013.

This year we are not in Israel for Pesach, so we're celebrating the first two days with two sedarim and attending synagogue services on Shabbat and Sunday. So there won't be a Jewish Humor Central post until Monday, when we'll return with another Joke to Start the Week.

All of us at Jewish Humor Central wish you and your family a Shabbat Shalom and a Chag Kasher v'Sameach.

Enjoy!
