Throwback Thursday Comedy Showcase: Buddy Hackett on Johnny Carson Show in 1986

Today we're turning back the clock to October 7, 1986.

In one of his many appearances on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, comedian Buddy Hackett comes through with his father's explanation of canine mating on the streets of New York, comments about the status of Soviet Jews in Gorbachev's USSR, and a skillful retelling of one of the oldest and funniest Jewish jokes ever told.

Wacky Wednesday Comedy Special: The "Every Man for Himself" Scene from "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"

Here's a wacky scene -- "Every Man for Himself" -- from a really wacky movie -- one of our favorite comedies, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

The story begins during a massive traffic jam, caused by reckless driver Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante), who, before kicking the bucket, cryptically tells the assembled drivers that he's buried a fortune in stolen loot, under the Big W.

The drivers, who meet by chance, include Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Phil Silvers, Ethel Merman, and Jonathan Winters. When negotiations for dividing up the buried treasure break down, everyone runs to their cars and the race for the money is on.

The 1963 movie runs three and a half hours and it's worth taking the time to watch it all.

Enjoy!

Wacky Wednesday Comedy Special: Buddy Hackett Pays a Surprise Visit to David Letterman

Whenever we hear the word "wacky" the first name that comes to mind is Buddy Hackett. Probably the funniest comedian to hit the nightclub and TV circuit, Buddy had a way of making you laugh by just making eye contact.

Buddy's video clips are getting harder to find on the internet, but over the years we've managed to share 18 of them with you that don't go into blue territory.

We're ever on the alert for unshared moments and we have one for you today. In 1984 (that's 37 years ago) Buddy did a surprise walk-on in the middle of David Letterman's late night TV show and the audience loved it.

Enjoy!

Wacky Wednesday Comedy Special: A Classic Buddy Hackett Joke with Johnny Carson

When it came to wacky comedy, no comedian could come close to Buddy Hackett. Whether you encountered hm in a nightclub, on television, or in his hilarious movies, Buddy had the talent to make you roll on the floor laughing.

One of his favorite haunts was the Johnny Carson Show, where he made many appearances. There was always a tension between Buddy and Johnny, with Johnny nervous about how close Buddy's joke would be to going over the line where clean comedy ended.

In this appearance on the Carson show, Buddy delivered one of his classic jokes, "I'll do anything for $200."

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Buddy Hackett on the Johnny Carson Show in 1978

We thought that we had run out of Buddy Hackett videos and were pleasantly surprised to find another batch of Buddy's appearances on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show. It's rare to find a Hackett video these days, especially one that's clean.

So go back with us 41 years to 1978 when Buddy made one of his visits to Carson's late night show.

In this episode, Buddy tells stories about an unusual treatment for severe headache pain and his new vegetarian diet.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Buddy Hackett Tells Johnny Carson About His Mother's Chulent

Every Thursday we take a walk down memory lane to find a video clip that made us laugh so many years ago and that continues to be a source of smiles and laughter.

Buddy Hackett is one of our favorites, and from the comments you've made on previous postings, he's one of your favorites, too. He appeared many times on The Johnny Carson show, and we have shared many video clips of those shows on Jewish Humor Central over the past few years.

In this episode on the Johnny Carson show from July 1974, Buddy tells Johnny about his mother's chulent and reads poems from The Naked Mind of Buddy Hackett, a book of poetry that he wrote back in 1974.

In the book, Buddy has something to say about nearly everything. Each of his poems expresses unusual insight and a respect for personal individuality. And each, he says, was inspired by a a specific person or event. He's saved them over the years-on scraps of paper and restaurant napkins-and the whole collection is here in his book, which is now out of print.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: Buddy Hackett on The Johnny Carson Tonight Show in 1973

We thought that we had run out of Buddy Hackett videos and were pleasantly surprised to find a mother lode of Buddy's appearances on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show. It's rare to find a Hackett video these days, especially one that's clean.

So go back with us 44 years to 1973 when Buddy made one of his visits to Carson's late night show.

In this episode, Buddy tells of his scouting days when he raised rabbits for a merit badge in animal husbandry, how his father converted a would-be robber into an upholsterer, his antics as a cook in the army, and how he met his wife Sherrine duBois, daughter of Esther Cohen, at the Concord Hotel.

Throwback Thursday Comedy Special: How Buddy Hackett Found Out His Wife Was Expecting

Today's Throwback Thursday episode goes way back 50 years to 1966, when Buddy Hackett was a regular guest on The Dean Martin Show

In this episode Buddy tells Dean how he found out that his wife Sherry was expecting a baby. In typical Hackett fashion the story includes late night activities, a snowstorm, a police officer, a mackinaw, a pair of boots, a pizza pie, and a balloon.

You just have to hear him tell the story to put all these elements together, and it's worth it because in the end you'll get a good laugh out of it.

Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday Comedy Flashback: Buddy Hackett on The Johnny Carson Show

Every Thursday is Throwback Thursday and each week we relish the opportunity to do a deep dive into the treasure chest of old funny video clips .

Two years ago we posted a segment of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show from 1984 where Buddy Hackett talked about the TV censors denying his First Amendment rights to use a three letter word meaning "buttocks." He launched into two jokes that illustrated his point.

We found the second part of that segment where Buddy tells a few more on the same theme. But don't worry, he may get close to the line where censors would pounce but he doesn't cross it.

Enjoy!

The Great Jewish Comedians: Buddy Hackett on The Dean Martin Show

Buddy Hackett (1924-2003) was born Leonard Hacker in Brooklyn. His career spanned more than half a century in nightclubs, movies, the stage and television.

His rubbery face was a familiar one on America's home screens in the 1950's and 1960's when he was a frequent guest on talk shows hosted by Jack Paar and Arthur Godfrey.

Hackett's irrepressible clowning was so familiar, in fact, that it always seemed to come as a surprise to audiences and critics when he would display solid acting talent in his movie and stage appearances.

He appeared many times on The Johnny Carson show, and we have shared many video clips of those shows on Jewish Humor Central over the past few years.

He also was a frequent guest on The Dean Martin Show. In this clip, Buddy tells Dean about his days in the legitimate theatre.

Enjoy!

Comedy Flashback: Buddy Hackett Tells Johnny Carson About His Catskill Days

Everybody has comfort foods that they gravitate to when they need a hearty meal with a touch of nostalgia and a taste of home.

We feel the same way about comedians. No matter how many new joke and story tellers come on the scene, there's just something special about the old timers, and listening to them carry on makes us wax nostalgic about the good old days of comedy in the Catskills and in clubs.

Buddy Hackett is one of our favorites, and from the comments you've made on previous postings, he's one of your favorites, too.

In this episode on the Johnny Carson show in 1989, Buddy tells Johnny how he changed his stage name from Butch Hacker to Buddy Hackett, how he came of age in the Catskills, and why he started using a Jewish accent.

Enjoy!

Comedy Classic: Buddy Hackett Asserts His First Amendment Rights to Johnny Carson

Some of the most liked of our blog posts have involved the comedy, or sometimes just the presence of Leonard Hackett, who we all know as Buddy Hackett.

Buddy made many appearances on the Johnny Carson Show, and often the dialogue between them was just as funny, or maybe even funnier, than Hackett's stand-up jokes.

A recurring theme of these late night conversations was what Hackett could and couldn't say on TV, given his propensity to cross the line and utter words that got Carson into trouble with the censors.

In the video we're sharing today, Hackett starts off by talking about golf, southern accents, and his mother, but at around 4 minutes into the clip he gets passionate about the TV censors denying his First Amendment rights to use a three letter word meaning "buttocks." He launches into two jokes that illustrate his point.

Enjoy!

Kutsher's Comedians Revisited: More Buddy Hackett on the Johnny Carson Show

Last month we posted a video of Buddy Hackett being interviewed and telling jokes on the Johnny Carson show. We discovered that it was part one of a two part segment broadcast on a Thanksgiving Day long ago, and that part two was also available.

Whenever we post Buddy Hackett videos, we get an enthusiastic response, so having found part two of this  segment, we're not going to keep it from you.

On this show, Carson was reviewing a list of Hackett routines with the comedian, and whenever he came to one that made him laugh, Hackett obliged by launching into the routine.

In this segment, Hackett deals with divorce (including the Jewish Get), naked baths in Tokyo, and a story about the time he was talked into a match with a sumo wrestler in Japan.

Enjoy!

Kutsher's Comedians Revisited: Buddy Hackett Cracks Up Johnny Carson

Continuing our nostalgic series of famous comedians who got their start or performed at Kutsher's Country Club, the Catskills resort that was sold last month, we found a funny clip of Buddy Hackett on the Johnny Carson show some years back.

While this is not strictly speaking a stand-up comedy routine, Hackett gets some good laughs from Carson and his audience from their conversation about turkeys, his mother's cooking, what his mother considered treyf, skiing in Colorado, and a variation of an old Jewish joke about a lady with a Yiddish accent and a photofinisher and a hat. We ran another version of the joke last year as told by Old Jews Telling Jokes actress Suzanne Shepherd.

Enjoy!

Buddy Hackett: Not Only Funny, But Smart and Caring

Buddy Hackett (1924-2003) was one of the funniest comedians ever to perform on hotel stages in the Catskills. Most people remember him for his jokes and stories that usually crossed the line into family-unfriendly territory.

We've been able to post a few of Buddy's jokes and interviews, but it wasn't easy to find clean ones. He wasn't a foul-mouth comic like many of today's stand-up performers, but part of the fun in watching him go through his act was anticipating the off-color references that crept into his stories and his delivery of the punch lines with a cherubic smile.

But behind his funny lines, Buddy was a smart and caring person. Not too many examples of his wisdom and caring nature made it through the generations of media conversion to find a place on the internet, but we found two that we'd like to share with you.

When appearing on the 1970s TV game show The Hollywood Squares, Buddy was asked "What country has the highest ratio of doctors to population?" Without hesitation, he blurted out his answer: "The country with the most Jews. I would say Israel." And then he went on to elaborate the reasons why, reasons that we instantly recognize and find intuitive. An easy score for the master comic.

In 1983, Buddy got involved with Jerry Lewis' telethon to provide financial and emotional assistance to children with neuromuscular disease. He delivered an emotional pitch for people to donate to the Muscular Dystrophy Association while delivering a special message to children with neuromuscular disease.

Hackett's Message: "Nobody is perfect. Everybody is different." We waited for a funny punchline at the end of the message, but there was none. This time Buddy was just being a mensch.

Enjoy both videos!

From the Catskill Collection: Buddy Hackett Tries to Keep it Clean on Johnny Carson Show

As we head into July, we're in a Catskills frame of mind. We're getting ready to give a few lectures at Kutsher's next week and at other resorts later in the month. We're also anticipating the July 30 release of a new film about comedians who got their start in the Catskills and went on to become famous in the larger entertainment world (more details coming in the next few weeks.)

So what better way to get ready than to reminisce and post some classic routines by the most famous Catskill Mountain comedians. We'll start with an old favorite, Buddy Hackett (1924-2003), as he tries to tell a clean joke on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, where he was the most frequent  guest.

Buddy was born Leonard Hacker in Brooklyn, the son of a Jewish upholsterer, and went to a public school that is now a yeshiva. His next door neighbor was Sandy Koufax.

Did he succeed in telling a clean joke? We'll let you decide. Actually he tells two jokes. The first is about a Filipino salad man who kept mixing up the letters "F" and "P" and farked the car by the pire flug and the foliceman gave him a farking ticket. You get the idea. The segment ends with a "guy walks into a bar" joke.

We're still laughing and hope you enjoy it, too!
