Where Can You Get the Best Ice Cream? Gelato in Italy? How About Bamba in Israel?

When you live in a hot country, you take your ice cream seriously. And when you live in Israel, where the diversity of food is phenomenal, well… be prepared for something spectacular. Whether you eat it in a cone or cup, Israeli ice cream is rapidly gaining a reputation as some of the best in the world.

Come on a quick journey to see how Israelis are using their extraordinary approach to food to conjure up new tastes in ice cream. Bamba ice cream, ice cream infused with mozzarella and basil, watermelon and Bulgarian cheese, orange, olive oil and salt, and even ice cream for dogs … Israelis aren’t afraid to try anything new. And of course, there’s all the regular flavors too.

Postcard from Israel - Touring Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory in Be'er Tuvia

One of the many benefits of spending a month in Israel is visiting some unexpected places that aren't on the standard tourist lists. Last week we visited the Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory and store in Be'er Tuvia, about an hour's drive from Jerusalem on the road to Ashdod and Ashkelon.

Though the grandkids were disappointed that they couldn't see the ice cream being made because the factory was closed during Pesach, they didn't mind too much because the factory store was open and serving lots of the delicious flavors and toppings.

The outdoor seating area next to the store provided a place to eat the ice cream and a life-size Ben & Jerry's plastic cow to ride on.

It didn't take us long to find a short video of a previous factory tour on YouTube, so here it is. The next time you're in Israel, you might want to include this stop on your itinerary.

Every Purim for the past 35 years we have published a Purim parody edition of The Kustanowitz Kronikle, covering virtually every aspect of Jewish life, and including parodies of hundreds of popular movies. About the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief

A long-term devotee of Jewish humor, Al Kustanowitz has been collecting and sharing it even before there was an internet. In 2009, after a 36-year career at IBM managing new technology projects, he founded Jewish Humor Central (jewishhumorcentral.com. Through the blog he brings a daily dose of fun and positive energy to readers who would otherwise start the day reading news that is often drab, dreary, and depressing (subscribing is free). He has published 12 books on humor based on his more than 4,000 blog postings, each of which includes a video clip and his commentary. He has presented more than 100 programs in South Florida and the Northeast on topics that include the great comedians and entertainers of the 20th century, funniest moments in film and television, flash mobs around the world, and composers and lyricists of the Great American Songbook.
