Musical Showcase: Ludmila Shapira Sings ABBA's Pop Hit "The Winner Takes it All" in Yiddish

"The Winner Takes It All" was a major success for ABBA, hitting No. 1 in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, South Africa and the United Kingdom. It reached the Top 5 in Austria, Finland, France, West Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Zimbabwe.

It peaked in the Top 10 in Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain and the United States (where it became ABBA's fourth and final American Top 10 hit, peaking at No. 8. The song spent 26 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, more than any other ABBA single).

The song was performed in many languages, so why not in Yiddish? Singer and song collector Ludmila Shapira took up the challenge and created a music video with Yiddish lyrics by Lenny Misikoff.

Sunday Standup Comedy Showcase: Rita Rudner on Stage in 1989

Some of the best standup comedy was on TV shows and comedy specials in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Today we continue our Sunday Standup series, sharing some of the classic routines by iconic comedians on Sunday editions of Jewish Humor Central.

We've been big fans of Rita Rudner ever since she started to appear on late night TV in the 1980s.

One of the hallmarks of her comedy is that it's clean, free from the vulgarity and shouting that many stand-up comics find necessary.  Her delivery is demure, tasteful, full of wry observations, and very funny.

Rudner started her career as a dancer, then switched to stand-up comedy about her dating experiences.  She married British producer Martin Bergman 37 years ago and they have a daughter.  She is fond of Jewish humor but generally reserves it for when she performs for Jewish audiences.

Rita is 71 now and still performing in South Florida and other locations.

In this piece from 1989, Rita Rudner's stand-up comedy is focused on relationships, family and herself with one-liners and stories delivered in her unique matter-of-fact way that has made her an audience favorite.

Broadway Stars Light the Way With a Mash of "Tomorrow" and Hanukkah Candle Lighting

Tonight we light the first Chanukah candle as we welcome the annual Festival of Lights into our homes.

On February 13, stars of Broadway and the Jewish world gave us a preview of this hopeful season by combining the candle lighting with the song Tomorrow from the musical Annie.

The songs were performed in the New York theater district while walking on Broadway and in Times Square by Julie Benko (Broadway’s “Funny Girl” and “Harmony”) and Cantor Azi Schwartz of Park Avenue Synagogue with a chorus of Broadway talent.

It's a timely juxtaposition of two themes that combine to give us hope as we enter a new era of American optimism.

Enjoy, and Happy Chanukah!

Another Hanukkah Video by the Y-Studs: A Jackson 5 Chanukah !

The Y-Studs are an all-male Jewish a cappella group, originally from Yeshiva University. They started as a club in 2010, and have since grown beyond the collegiate level to the professional stage. Before anything else, they're a group of college students and young professionals who love making music together.

They pride themselves on both their energy and their depth, and are extremely deliberate about the music they choose, ensuring every song has both uniquely Jewish undertones and a universally resonant message.

In this new video, the Y-Studs perform a medley of songs with the Motown sound made popular by the Jackson 5 with a unique Chanukah twist.

Here Come the Chanukah Videos: Yonina Sings Hebrew Version "Be a Light" by Rabbi Neal Katz

We've been posting versions of Hebrew liturgical and popular songs by Yonina (Yoni and Nina Tokayer, a married musical duo who live in the small town of Pardes Chana, Israel.) They have been uploading home videos to Facebook and YouTube and reaching millions.

Just in time for Chanukah, Yoni and Nina posted a Hebrew translation of the song Be a Light, written in English by Rabbi Neal Katz, rabbi of Congregation Beth El in Tyler, Texas.

Rabbi Katz has released three CDs of his original Jewish music. His songs have become popular in congregations, camps, and Religious Schools around the country. In 2009, Neal also released a folk-music CD, and in 2010, he was a finalist in the Kerrville Musical Festival's New Folk Contest. The website for his music can be found at KatzMusic.com

In addition to his musical travels in the States, when Neal travels abroad, he likes to share his music with member congregations in the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Neal has been honored to share his music and help lead Shabbat worship services at Progressive Jewish congregations in Warsaw, Paris, Prague, Budapest, London, St. Petersburg, and Copenhagen.

Tumbalalaika Around the World: As Sung by The San Francisco Yiddish Combo at East Bay Jewish Music Festival

The Yiddish folk love song Tumbalalaika originated in Eastern Europe in the 19th century, but its exact origin is hard to pinpoint. That hasn't prevented it from being sung and played over and over, not only in places where Yiddish songs are sung, but just about everywhere in the world, in vocal and instrumental versions, in cabarets and in the movies.

Just as we have followed the songs Hava Nagila, Adon Olam, Hevenu Shalom Aleichem, and Abanibi as they took different forms as interpreted by a wide variety of singers, musicians, and dancers, we're continuing the series today that we started back in 2012, sharing our 24th version of this universal courting and love song.

The San Francisco Yiddish Combo was formed by accident when a love of Klezmer music collided with their collective backgrounds in every genre except Klezmer. Now they have embarked on a journey around the world to present their own unique blend of everything that is Klezmer, mixed with years of experience in the jazz, blues, folk, and even hip hop world. This group performs Klezmer for the 21st century! Made up of classically trained musicians who enjoy stretching musical boundaries, the SFYC is led by cellist Rebecca Roudman who has fronted groups all over the world bringing her virtuosic and fiery playing to stages from China to Italy and beyond.

English Translation:

A young lad stands, and he thinks

Thinks and thinks the whole night through

Whom to take and not to shame

Whom to take and not to shame

Tumbala, Tumbala, Tumbalalaika

Tumbala, Tumbala, Tumbalalaika

Tumbalalaika, strum balalaika

Tumbalalaika, may we be happy

Girl, girl, I want to ask of you

What can grow, grow without rain?

What can burn and never end?

What can yearn, cry without tears?

Foolish lad, why do you have to ask?

A stone can grow, grow without rain

Love can burn and never end

A heart can yearn, cry without tears
