How well I remember Catskill Comedians, they made up for the price of the stay.
ReplyDeleteCatskill Comedians were worth the price of the hotel. Now there are comedians on cruise ships - but they lack tam.
ReplyDeletevery funny and not a crude word.
ReplyDeleteLoved this man from the time I was a kid. Delivery was the key.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first put this on YouTube, I never thought it would become the center pc of the show. To my surprise, while living in NYC, I decided to go see this show. To my 'Stunned' surprised a huge TV was brought on the stage and for all to see, it was my recording! Upon the end of the show, I stayed and instead of paying homage to the performers, I went to the crew and asked them where they found this pc. They informed me that they found it YOUTUBE but didn't know how to get in touch with the person that listed it online. I then told that it was me and rather any payment for a release, I told them that a tribute to all the comedians of the era that made me laugh throughout my life, would be a celebration of the Jewish spirit. Before he passed, I saw Mr. King when he did the one man show MGM and told of this pc I had found to which he replied "That was a good one" and the original pc of paper he had given to the Smithsonian.
ReplyDeleteSuch a good man, he always will be......Survived by..!
I adored Alan King (z"l) when I was growing up. Some things just don't change; today, a couple of weeks from my 65th birthday I laughed at this routine until tears rolled down my cheeks.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes ... of course I'd seen him do this shtick before! But his delivery and his ... presence, I suppose I could label it, were unmatched. They still are.
His humor didn't depend on being self-deprecating like Rodney Dangerfield, or on being insulting and obnoxious like Don Rickles. Mr. King was simply a guy having a conversation with his audience. Okay -- A guy with great material, a lot of heart, and superb delivery. He was like your favorite, funny uncle at Thanksgiving dinner, relishing making everyone laugh so hard they nearly aspirate their stuffing. He was Alan King, and that's all he needed to be.
Mr King, you're missed, as are so many of your generation. I hope you're "knocking 'em dead" (ba-dum-bum!) in Heaven, with Mrs. King, your Catskill buddies, and a few high-ranking angels in the front row. (G-d, of course, is the emcee.)
May your memory be a blessing.๐
Baruch Dayan Ha'Emet.
