Welcoming Shabbat with Shalom Aleichem by "The Levites", a New Israeli Group

HaLeviim with Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv Yisrael Meir Lau
"The Levites" (HaLeviim) are seven singers with an impressive vocal range - a new band that aims to bring Jewish music to the secular audience. Behind the project is producer Ron Ben Yosef, the man behind the TETA label.

Today, foreign Jews who are not religious actually connect to Jewish poetry, and Ben Yosef believes that the secular public in Israel is also looking for a cultural connection: "Many secular people do not know the musical tradition we have, the Jewish people. This tradition began in the Temple where the Levites sang. And since it was before they invented the amplification systems, the vocals were based on a strong vocal ability, which was accompanied by instruments in a limited presence, such as harp and violin. "

Even though the Levites are five singers, the ensemble includes seven ("because there is always someone sick or busy and can not fly abroad"), the youngest of whom is 20, and the oldest is 40. Guy Azikri is a touch therapist, Elior Itzkovitz - importer of stone cladding, Roniel Cohen - computer man, Yehuda Farjun - studying law, Nitzan Levi - a position in the Military Advocate General, Meir Molkendov - a cantor in a synagogue, and Avihar Tzadok - yeshiva student (and also the brother of the prodigy Ozia Zadok).

In this recently released video, The Levites sing Shalom Aleichem to welcome Shabbat.

Enjoy, and Shabbat shalom!
